Fan shroud for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

The fan shroud channels air between the coolant radiator and the cooling fan. It limits air being drawn around the radiator core and helps distribute the available airflow across the cooling surface. Cracks, missing seals or an incorrect fit can therefore cause overheating, particularly when idling, in urban traffic and during heavy-duty operation at low road speeds. An intact radiator and a correctly functioning fan drive cannot always compensate for damaged air ducting.

Designs, dimensions and vehicle compatibility

Fan shrouds are available as one-piece housings, split designs that allow removal around the fan, and assemblies with a separate fan ring. Depending on the application, materials include glass-fibre-reinforced thermoplastics or metal constructions. Temperature resistance, vibration fatigue resistance and dimensional stability are key factors; this component is not subject to coolant pressure. In aerodynamic terms, the opening diameter, radial blade tip clearance, axial fan position and seal against the radiator frame are particularly important.

On MAN TGL and TGM models with D08 engines, the cooling module may differ from that on TGS and TGX models with D26 engines. Mercedes Atego with OM 936 and Actros with OM 471 also require variant-specific selection. On buses such as Lion’s City and Citaro, engine position and cooling module layout also play a role; on vans such as TGE and Sprinter, the shroud may form part of an electric fan module.

Always identify parts using the vehicle’s chassis number, together with the original part numbers and equipment specifications. Visual comparison or selection by model name alone is never sufficient. Also check the radiator dimensions, mounting pattern, fan diameter, drive type and any air flaps. Clearances and installation depth must comply with the manufacturer’s specifications for the particular variant, rather than universal millimetre values.

Typical faults and step-by-step diagnosis

Common defects include cracks around mounting lugs, broken screw mounting points, thermal distortion and detached sealing strips. Scuff marks on the inner ring indicate contact with the fan blades. In this case, also check the engine mounts, radiator mountings and fan bearings: replacing only the shroud may leave the underlying cause unresolved. Loose fixings can cause a rattling noise; rising coolant temperature at low speeds is consistent with insufficient airflow, but does not prove that the shroud is faulty.

  1. Make safe: allow the engine to cool, switch off the drive and secure electrically or automatically controlled fans against unexpected start-up in accordance with the workshop procedure.
  2. Inspect: use an inspection lamp to check the full circumference, mounting points and connections to the radiator frame. Look for missing sections, open joints and debris between the heat exchangers.
  3. Measure: with the fan stationary, measure the blade tip clearance at several positions using suitable measuring equipment. Check centring and axial position with a depth gauge. Compare the results with the manufacturer’s specifications; assess any suspected play or runout in the fan hub using the prescribed dial indicator procedure.
  4. Test operation: use diagnostic equipment to record the coolant temperature and, where available, the requested and actual fan speeds. Perform the prescribed actuator test with the guards fitted. Rule out a faulty viscous coupling, an electrical control fault and a blocked radiator core.
Replacement without recurring damage

Replace cracked or permanently distorted fan shrouds; improvised adhesive repairs around load-bearing mounting points do not provide sufficient resistance to vibration. Fit the shroud without stress, using the correct spacer sleeves, fasteners and seals. Use the specified tightening torques to avoid crushing plastic mounting lugs. First rectify worn mountings and assess whether any fan blades that have made contact need replacing. Then check the clearance all the way around and carry out a controlled warm-up and load test. Confirm that there are no rubbing noises and that the coolant temperature remains within the vehicle specifications.
