Gearbox for MAN / Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

Braem, your partner for gearboxes and transmission parts for MAN and Mercedes trucks, coaches and vans

The gearbox is one of the most heavily loaded and technically complex components of a MAN or Mercedes truck, coach or van. It ensures optimal use of engine power at different speeds. It determines how efficiently, smoothly and reliably that power is transferred to the driven wheels. It enables a vehicle to drive forward or backwards. The transport application, such as long-haul transport, construction traffic or urban supply, determines the type of gearbox. There are manual gearboxes and automatic gearboxes. At Braem you will find an extensive range of gearboxes and transmission parts that allow repairs to be carried out correctly, durably and cost-efficiently.

The role of the gearbox within the complete drivetrain

A gearbox ensures that engine torque is used optimally, regardless of vehicle load, speed or driving conditions. It enables a vehicle to accelerate and decelerate. It enables a vehicle to move forward or backwards. In doing so, it works closely with other vehicle systems.

Interaction with engine, clutch and drivetrain

Common wear and recognizable problems

During use, a gearbox is constantly subject to wear. Common symptoms of wear are: difficult shifting, jerky shifting, abnormal noises under stress, vehicle vibrations, oil leakage and irregular or interrupted vehicle movement while driving. This wear can be caused by normal wear due to friction between the various moving parts of the gearbox, overloading the vehicle, lack of lubrication inside the gearbox due to contaminated or insufficient oil, incorrect shifting by the driver, and vibrations from the drive train mounted to the gearbox.

Technical indicators that must not be ignored

Common symptoms are increased operating temperature, abnormal oil pressure readings, metal flakes in the oil, or gearbox-related fault codes appearing on the dashboard in the cabin. As soon as the internal oil pressure structurally rises above the recommended value, the risk of seal failure increases significantly. This can lead to oil loss, which jeopardizes the lubrication of critical components and ultimately causes complete transmission damage. Excessively high oil temperature reduces the oil’s lubricating properties. This leads to faster wear of the rotating parts. Excessive high temperatures also mean that the shafts, bearings, gears and synchronizer rings expand and deform, which can cause them to seize. In addition, a poorly functioning gearbox can place extra stress on the engine.

Repairing or replacing the gearbox

A gearbox can only be repaired provided it has not operated without oil. Without oil, the rotating parts, such as shafts, gears, bearings, sliding sleeves and synchronizer rings are no longer lubricated. This causes irreparable damage to these parts, making them unusable. In this case, the complete gearbox must be replaced.

If the gearbox has not been operated without oil, repair is possible. Similar to engines, the gearbox is fully disassembled. Each gearbox component undergoes a thorough inspection for reusability. Non-reusable parts are replaced with new. The gearbox is then reassembled and is ready for installation in the vehicle.

We offer a wide range of new, used and refurbished gearboxes. These are tested according to strict quality standards.

When repair is technically justified

Repair is possible when the damage is limited to replaceable parts. In these cases, the most cost-efficient solution can be chosen. You can opt for a used gearbox that has been removed from another vehicle. Alternatively, you can choose to repair the gearbox where necessary so that it operates properly. Or you can choose a refurbished gearbox in which everything needed is replaced so that the gearbox operates in an-as-good-as new condition.

When replacement is the safest choice

In the event of damage to gears, cracking in the housing or prolonged overheating, replacement is usually the only reliable option. Continuing to drive with a severely damaged gearbox increases the risk of additional damage to other vehicle systems, such as the power take-off shaft, also known as the PTO (“Power Take-Off”).

Gearboxes tailored to use and load

Not every use places the same demands on a transmission. Vehicles that mainly operate in urban distribution shift far more often and have different wear patterns than tractors that cover long distances at a constant speed.

Practical advice from daily experience

Our specialists advise paying extra attention to transmission cooling and lubrication for heavy-duty applications. Overheating is one of the most underestimated causes of premature transmission damage. Regular checks of oil quality and temperature prevent expensive repairs and significantly extend service life.
