Bumper brackets connect the front or rear bumper to the chassis, front module or body structure. They determine the position, height and alignment of the bumper and must reliably absorb forces from minor impacts, vibrations, chassis torsion and aerodynamic loads. For MAN F8, F90, F2000, TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3, as well as Mercedes LN, SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs, Antos and Econic, bumper supports vary significantly depending on the vehicle specification. On MAN TGE and Mercedes Sprinter, Vito, V-Class and Vario models as well, mounting points, bumper shape and sensor integration depend on the version. Bumper brackets for buses, such as the MAN Lion’s City, Mercedes Citaro and Neoplan Tourliner, are generally designed for specific front panels and larger bumper modules.

A bumper bracket may consist of a pressed steel bracket, a welded support bracket, an aluminium profile or a combination with plastic guides and energy-absorbing elements. Steel versions are often fitted with a corrosion-resistant coating, while aluminium brackets offer weight savings but may be susceptible to cracking around bolt holes after overloading. Dimensions are critical: centre-to-centre distances between mounting holes, flatness of the mating surface, bracket length and position in relation to headlights, lower spoilers, radar covers and steps must match exactly.

Always identify bumper brackets using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Within a single vehicle generation, differences may occur due to axle configuration, cab height, year of manufacture, bumper variant, towing equipment, driver assistance systems or construction-site use. For example, a steel bumper carrier from a MAN TGS used in construction traffic is not automatically interchangeable with a composite bumper mounting from a road transport version.

The most common faults are bent brackets after contact with a loading dock or post, torn bolt holes, cracked weld seams, corrosion beneath the coating and fatigue cracks around bends or mounting lugs. A bumper that sits crookedly, rubs against a headlight, does not fit properly against a lower spoiler or vibrates while driving does not necessarily indicate damage to the bumper itself. Often, a bumper bracket, guide or chassis mounting is deformed.

First check the bumper height on the left and right in relation to a fixed chassis reference point. Then use a straightedge or laser to measure parallelism with the grille, headlamp units and front panel. Remove the bumper if the deviation increases when the mounting bolts are loosened: this indicates preloading caused by a bent carrier. Inspect bolted connections for elongated holes, missing spacers and damaged threads. On steel brackets, also check the wall thickness around corrosion spots; surface rust is not the same as structural material loss.

Do not use heat to straighten a high-strength steel bumper bracket unless this is explicitly permitted by the manufacturer. Heating can affect material strength and corrosion protection. Replace a bracket in the event of a sharp kink, crack, deformed bolt fitment or an insufficiently flat mating surface. At the same time, replace damaged bolts, nuts, plastic clips and guide blocks. Tighten fasteners to the specified torque and, after installation, check the clearance around lighting, parking sensors and any ACC radar (Adaptive Cruise Control).

A durable repair starts with ruling out hidden damage to chassis rails, front panels and headlamp carriers. If a new bumper does not fit correctly, it must not be installed using additional washers, forced bolts or tensioned mountings. This causes stress, premature cracking and poor fitment of adjacent body parts. First correct the underlying support structure, then check the panel gaps across the full width of the bumper.

For vehicles that frequently manoeuvre on construction sites, distribution yards or loading docks, bumper brackets deserve extra attention during periodic damage inspections.
