Cover panel lower

A lower spoiler is the lower aerodynamic and protective section of the front bumper or, depending on the version, a separate bumper panel. On MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, this component limits airflow beneath the vehicle, reduces turbulence around the bumper and protects the underlying cooling pack, air guides, wiring and sensors from splash water, stone chips and dirt. A correctly fitted lower spoiler therefore contributes to lower fuel consumption, reduced wind noise and a neat vehicle appearance.

Lower spoilers vary considerably depending on the vehicle series, bumper version, ride height, fog lamp configuration, parking assistance and the presence of radar sensors for driver assistance systems. They are fitted, among others, to MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX, TG3 and TGE models, as well as Mercedes Atego, Actros, Arocs, Antos, Econic, Sprinter and Vito models. Lower bumper sections are also vehicle-specific on MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach, Neoplan coaches and Mercedes Citaro or Tourismo buses. A part must therefore always be identified using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Most lower spoilers are made from impact-resistant thermoplastic materials, such as PP/EPDM (polypropylene with ethylene-propylene-diene rubber), ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) or fibre-reinforced composite. These materials combine low weight with sufficient flexibility in the event of minor contact. However, on construction vehicles, low-chassis variants and city buses, the underside is particularly vulnerable to contact with kerbs, speed bumps, loading docks, snow build-up and uneven road surfaces.

Common defects include torn mounting tabs, hairline cracks around screw holes, bent mounting brackets, missing clips, worn plastic guides and deformation caused by a previous collision. A lower spoiler that sags locally may start to vibrate at speed. This not only causes noise, but also increases the risk of the panel tearing further or becoming completely detached. On vehicles with bumper radar or parking sensors, an incorrect version can also place the sensor bracket under tension, resulting in fault messages or incorrect sensor alignment.

First inspect the complete bumper assembly, not just the visible plastic section. With the vehicle on a level surface, check the panel gaps between the bumper, headlamp units, wing corner sections and lower spoiler. Uneven gaps often indicate a displaced bumper carrier, damaged guide or deformed support. Then inspect all mounting points for missing retaining clips, corrosion on metal brackets and torn mounting holes. Do not simply pull on the panel by hand: assess whether the lower spoiler could contact cooling modules, wiring harnesses or air guides under light load.

Surface scratches can be sanded and repainted, provided the material has not been structurally weakened. Small cracks can only be repaired if the mounting areas remain intact and professional plastic welding or a material-compatible repair method is used. In the case of torn mounting lugs, permanent deformation, missing sections or damage after a heavy impact, replacing the lower spoiler is the technically reliable choice. Replace damaged clips, screws, sealing profiles and guides at the same time; reusing stretched fasteners often results in renewed rattling or detachment.

Fit the lower spoiler without tension and follow the installation sequence specified by the vehicle manufacturer. First centre the bumper and side guides, then fit the lower fasteners. Outer screws tightened too early can place the plastic under torsion, causing cracks during temperature fluctuations. Use only fastening materials with the correct head diameter and clamping force; a washer that is too small or an incorrect clip concentrates the load around the mounting hole.

For vehicles operating intensively internationally or frequently visiting loading bays and urban areas, a correctly fitting lower spoiler reduces air resistance and protects costly bumper components. A part that can be supplied in colour also reduces downtime after bodywork repairs.
