Support

Step supports connect step boxes, steps and walk plates to the chassis or cab structure. They must reliably withstand the driver's weight, dynamic loads from entering and exiting, and vibrations while driving. On MAN and Mercedes trucks, these mounting parts are version-specific: geometry, bolt patterns, height, material thickness and corrosion protection vary by vehicle series and body configuration. This applies, among others, to MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX and TG3, and to Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic. Therefore, always identify supports using the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Step supports are generally made of galvanised steel, painted steel or aluminium, depending on the load class and mounting location. Steel supports provide high bending stiffness and are common on heavily loaded truck step boxes. Aluminium versions reduce weight and are used where corrosion resistance and weight savings are important. Plastic step boxes may also require metal reinforcement brackets or pressed-in threaded inserts to prevent local stress concentrations.

When selecting, pay attention to left- or right-hand version, front or rear mounting position, spacing between mounting holes, support angle and connection to the chassis bracket, cab bracket or mudguard structure. A support with seemingly matching dimensions may mount the step under tension due to a different offset. This can cause cracks in plastic parts, premature wear of rubber components or loosening fasteners. Also check whether bolts, washers, spacer bushes and vibration dampers are required separately or form part of the support assembly.

The most common defects are bent support brackets after contact with a kerb, loading dock or off-road obstacle, corrosion around bolt holes and fatigue cracks in bent areas. On vehicles frequently operated on unpaved worksites, stone impact can damage the coating, after which rust formation reduces the effective material thickness.

First inspect the complete entry module, not just the visible support. Clean the mounting area and check welds, bend radii and holes for hairline cracks, traces of corrosion and oval bolt holes. Move the step by hand: noticeable play indicates loose bolted connections, deformed brackets or worn vibration dampers. Then measure the position of the step relative to the cab or chassis rail on both the left and right sides. A clear difference indicates a bent bracket or chassis console. Check cracks using penetrant testing (PT, Penetrant Testing) when surface rust obstructs assessment.

Also check the tightening torque of the mounting bolts according to the vehicle specification. Do not reuse stretched bolts, damaged self-locking nuts or dented spacer bushes. A support refitted without addressing the cause of the deformation will quickly fail again.

Replace supports as soon as the load-bearing section is visibly bent, corrosion causes pitting, bolt holes are worn or cracks are present. Straightening is only justifiable when explicitly permitted by the manufacturer; local bending back alters the material structure and reduces fatigue strength. If the step box is damaged, its mounting surfaces must also be checked: a new bracket will not compensate for cracked plastic mounting lugs.

Install the new support without tension. First fit all mounting points hand-tight, align the step box and step, then tighten crosswise using the specified fastening materials. Apply suitable corrosion protection to damaged steel mounting surfaces, without unintentionally insulating contact surfaces or earth points. Correct support fitment reduces vibration, prevents steps from coming loose and keeps the vehicle safe for operation.
