Access steps provide safe access between chassis level and the working platform, the catwalk behind the cab or other service and connection points. On tractor units, they are subjected to daily use when drivers connect electrical coiled cables, compressed-air connections and trailer couplings. A sufficiently wide, slip-resistant step reduces the risk of slipping, especially in rain, snow, diesel residue or mud. Access steps are mainly found on MAN TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3 models and Mercedes Axor, Actros and Arocs, as well as on specific chassis configurations of the Atego, Econic, MAN TGM and TGL.

The design varies according to chassis configuration, wheelbase, chassis height, position of air tanks, battery boxes, exhaust aftertreatment systems, mudguards and the construction of the working platform. Separate left- and right-hand access steps are available, as well as fixed or folding versions, designs with an integrated anti-slip surface and steps with specific mounting brackets. They are generally made from hot-dip galvanised steel, aluminium sheet or aluminium profile material. Steel versions offer high resistance to point loads and torsion; aluminium reduces weight and corrosion, but is more susceptible to permanent deformation in the event of impact damage.

An access step must always be identified based on the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient: even within a single vehicle series, mounting points, length, profile height and installation position may differ.

Typical damage results from contact with loading bays, obstacles on construction sites, stone chips or incorrect use as a support point while manoeuvring. Look for bent support profiles, cracked welds, elongated mounting holes, corrosion around bolted joints and a worn anti-slip surface. On vehicles used in winter service, earthmoving or waste transport, moisture can accumulate between the step, support and chassis rail. This can cause crevice corrosion, even when the visible upper side still appears intact.

First check whether the damage is limited to the access step or has also affected the supports, chassis brackets and catwalk. Clean the component and inspect the underside using a work light. Then measure the distance between the mounting points and compare it with the nominal dimension of the new step. A difference in centre-to-centre distance, height or alignment often indicates a bent support structure. Check bolts for thread damage, stretch marks and insufficient preload. Also assess the clearance to tyres, mudguards, air lines and electrical wiring looms at full suspension travel or chassis twist.

Replace access steps when the profile is structurally bent, the anti-slip surface no longer provides sufficient grip, corrosion affects the material thickness or cracks are visible around the mountings. Straightening aluminium profiles is often not a durable solution: local stretching weakens the material and results in an incorrect fit. For steel versions, repair is only advisable when the load-bearing section, galvanised coating and mounting surfaces can be technically restored without reducing strength.

Install the new step only after the supports have been aligned without stress. Use the specified fastening materials, washers and locking devices, and observe the manufacturer's tightening torque. Where necessary, apply corrosion protection to damaged metal contact surfaces without contaminating the anti-slip areas. After installation, check stability with a practical load test and verify that the driver has a full support surface when wearing safety footwear. A correctly fitting access step reduces the risk of falls, prevents consequential damage to chassis brackets and helps keep vehicle downtime to a minimum.
