Drip rail for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

A drip rail channels precipitation in a controlled manner along the roof edge and door area of the cab. This body component limits water ingress along side windows, doors and entry steps, and prevents water from remaining on weld seams, roof gutters or sealing edges for extended periods. For MAN trucks, buses and vans such as the TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX, TG3 and TGE, and Mercedes Atego, Actros, Arocs, Econic, Sprinter and Vito, as well as Citaro, Tourismo and Neoplan buses, the design varies according to cab shape, roof height, door configuration and year of manufacture. Parts must always be identified using the vehicle's chassis number; visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Construction, fitment and compatibility of drip rails

Drip rails are available as painted or unpainted body parts, plastic trim strips, aluminium profiles or flexible rubber-plastic profiles with an integrated sealing lip. Depending on the version, they are fitted using clips, plastic pins, double-sided automotive tape, butyl sealant or fixing points in the roof edge. Correct profile geometry is essential: the drainage edge must protrude sufficiently to guide water outside the side window and door seal, without causing wind noise, contact with the door or stress in the cab panel.

On high cabs, such as the MAN TGX XXL or GX and Mercedes Actros GigaSpace, lengths, radii of curvature and connecting pieces differ from those of compact distribution cabs. On buses, too, a drip rail is often connected to roof lining, side wall panels or window pillars. Therefore, in addition to the chassis number, check the left- or right-hand fitment, wheelbase and cab variant, roof version, presence of a sun visor and the fixing method. A profile of apparently identical length may have a different end shape, clip spacing or water drainage angle.

Typical damage patterns and targeted diagnosis

Common defects include broken clips, warped profiles, detached tape, UV-aged plastic, corrosion beneath metal trims and torn sealing lips. Following damage caused by a branch, car wash, collision or cab tilt, the drip rail may lift locally. This causes water to run behind the profile rather than alongside it. In practice, this results in wet door panels, moisture behind interior trim, dirty entry steps, wind noise or corrosion formation at the roof edge.

Inspection procedure for water ingress

First clean the roof gutter, the transition to the A-pillar and the drainage channels. Then carry out a targeted water test: allow water to run from front to rear over the roof edge for several minutes, without directing high-pressure water straight at the seals. Observe whether the water film remains outside the door seal and inspect the interior for signs of moisture. Measure the distance between the profile and the door and side window at several points; a visible difference indicates distorted fixing points or an incorrect profile. Also check the condition of the primary door seal, as a drip rail will not restore compressed or torn door rubbers.

Replacement and durable installation

Replace drip rails when the profile is permanently deformed, clips no longer lock, corrosion affects the mounting flange or the sealing lip has lost its elasticity. Reusing old clips is not recommended when retaining tabs have turned white, are worn or broken. Carefully remove adhesive residue using a material-safe cleaner and degrease the mounting surface before applying new tape or butyl sealant. Do not damage the paint or primer layer on plastic cab parts; an exposed paint edge accelerates corrosion on steel roof edges.

Fit the profile without twisting and press the clips into their nominal positions in sequence. Then check the free movement of the door, side window and any cab spoiler. Correct fitment prevents wind noise and premature detachment. Braem can supply cab parts in colour, helping to reduce repair time following bodywork damage.
