Stabiliser bar for MAN and Mercedes trucks

A stabiliser bar in the cab suspension limits lateral movement and cab roll relative to the chassis. This component contributes to predictable handling, reduces cab sway when cornering and protects cab mountings, cab shock absorbers, tilting mechanisms and interior components against excessive alternating loads. Stabiliser bars are fitted to a range of MAN and Mercedes vehicles, including MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX and TG3, Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic. Relevant cab types include MAN TGX GX, GM and GN cabs, MAN TGS NN, TN and TM cabs, Mercedes Actros ClassicSpace, StreamSpace, BigSpace and GigaSpace, and Mercedes Arocs ClassicSpace, StreamSpace and BigSpace. The correct part must always be determined using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Function, design and compatibility of cab stabiliser bars

The cab stabiliser bar is generally a spring-steel torsion bar mounted between the cab frame and the chassis via bearing bushes, ball joints or rubber-metal mountings. In air-suspended cab suspension systems, the air bellows are integrated into the cab shock absorbers and this system works together with level control. In mechanically suspended designs, the stabiliser accounts for a greater proportion of roll stiffness.

The shape, torsional stiffness, diameter, arm length and mounting width vary according to the chassis configuration, cab weight, wheelbase and application. A heavy long cab, such as a MAN TGX GX or Mercedes Actros GigaSpace, requires a different stabiliser configuration from a compact distribution cab on an Atego or TGL.

Wear patterns and targeted diagnosis

Typical complaints include knocking or rattling noises on cobblestones and speed bumps, lateral cab movement, creaking noises when getting in and out, or an unsettled feeling when negotiating bends and roundabouts. These symptoms are often incorrectly attributed to cab shock absorbers or worn silent blocks. However, a worn ball joint in a link rod, a torn bearing bush or a deformed stabiliser can cause the same complaints.

Workshop inspection procedure

Park the vehicle on a level surface, secure it against rolling away and unload the cab suspension in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. First check visually for cracks in rubber-metal bushes, missing lock nuts, corrosion around the bar ends, deformed brackets and contact marks between the stabiliser bar, chassis and cab frame. Then use a pry bar to assess radial and axial play in the link rods and bearing bushes. Noticeable movement without immediate torsional resistance and knocking noises indicate replacement is required.

If in doubt, measure the diameter of the torsion bar with a vernier caliper and compare the centre-to-centre distance between the mounting points with the part specifications. Also check the cab height on the left and right. A height difference can lead to an incorrect diagnosis: a faulty height control valve or cab shock absorber loads the stabiliser asymmetrically and accelerates bush and joint wear.

Replacement and prevention of consequential damage

Replace torn bearing bushes and corroded mounting brackets on both sides of the stabiliser. Fit bearing bushes in the specified installation position; some bushes have a groove, arrow marking or specific internal geometry for the correct torsional direction. Tighten fasteners to the specified torque only when the cab is at its normal ride height. Tightening at full rebound can pre-twist rubber bushes and significantly shorten their service life.

After installation, carry out a road test over uneven surfaces and check for abnormal noises, cab alignment and unrestricted movement during tilting. Correct fitment of the stabiliser bar and mounting parts prevents stresses in the cab frame. The rapid availability of suitable cab parts also helps to keep truck downtime to a minimum.
