Belts in the engine cooling system transmit drive power from the crankshaft pulley to, among other things, the water pump, viscous fan, alternator and, depending on the version, the air conditioning compressor. MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans generally use ribbed multi-rib belts, V-belts or, on certain older drivetrains, several separate V-belts. These belts ensure the correct operation of the cooling system, air conditioning system and electrical system under varying loads. In practice, problems are mainly caused by incorrect alignment, incorrect belt tension, contaminated pulleys or wear to belt tensioners and idler pulleys. Especially on vehicles that idle frequently, operate on distribution routes or work under high thermal loads, an apparently simple belt can quickly lead to noise, slip, insufficient cooling or accelerated wear of adjacent components. A worn or incorrectly fitted multi-rib belt can result in insufficient coolant circulation and fan drive. This increases the risk of engine temperature problems, cavitation in the water pump, battery charging faults and unplanned downtime.

MAN and Mercedes use various belt configurations: conventional V-belts and ribbed multi-rib belts with different belt lengths and numbers of ribs. The correct version is determined by the diameter and groove profile of the pulleys, the number of ribs, the effective belt length, the position of tensioner pulleys and idler pulleys, the presence of an automatic belt tensioner and the driven accessories. Belts must be identified using the chassis number. This prevents fitting problems, incorrect tension and premature failure.

When developing a new engine, flat belts or V-belts are carefully designed and selected based on various technical parameters. The aim is for the belt to run powerfully, reliably and quietly without slipping. The power to be transmitted, speed and diameter of the pulleys, the required belt tension and the results of a vibration analysis are important criteria in determining the belts.

Typical wear patterns and targeted diagnosis

Typical wear patterns include cracking between the ribs, shiny flanks caused by slipping, fraying at the sides and uneven wear due to misalignment. A belt that regularly squeals during a cold start or when a load is engaged also often indicates not only an issue with the belt itself, but also a fatigued belt tensioner, seized idler pulleys or developing bearing problems in one of the driven components. When the engine temperature rises irregularly or the batteries do not charge, the entire belt drive system must be checked. A proper diagnosis starts with an inspection of the stationary vehicle with the engine running. Check for rib damage, contamination by oil or coolant, abnormal running marks and vibration of the belt tensioner and idler pulleys. If necessary, measure the tension according to the specification, while also assessing the damping of the automatic belt tensioner. Fitting a new belt to worn pulleys or a misaligned pulley will not provide a lasting solution.

Switch off the engine, remove the ignition key and first check whether coolant, engine oil or hydraulic oil is reaching the drive system. Then turn the water pump, alternator, tensioner pulley and idler pulleys by hand. Rough running noise, noticeable radial play, seizure or leakage at the water pump means that fitting only a new belt is not a durable solution. With a manual tensioner, measure belt deflection using a belt tension gauge according to the specified measuring length and force.

Replace belts preventively when the maintenance interval has been reached or as soon as wear is visible. Always replace linked V-belts as a complete set so that length, elasticity and power transmission remain identical. Never mix old and new belts. Clean pulley grooves only without aggressive solvents that affect the rubber, and check alignment using a straightedge or laser alignment tool. Misalignment causes lateral loading, rapid rib wear and bearing loads on the water pump and alternator.

After fitting, the belt must be correctly positioned in all pulley grooves and the engine must run briefly until it reaches operating temperature. Then check for belt vibration, abnormal noise, charging voltage and a stable coolant temperature.
