Coolant pump

The water pump and thermostat together regulate coolant circulation and the engine operating temperature. In MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, a properly functioning cooling system is essential to keep cylinder heads, cylinder liners, EGR coolers, oil coolers and turbochargers within their permissible temperature range. A defective water pump or thermostat does not only cause overheating: excessively low coolant temperatures also increase fuel consumption, wear and soot loading in the exhaust aftertreatment system. Always identify water pumps, thermostats, seals and, where applicable, thermostat housings using the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

The design varies according to engine family, emission standard, year of manufacture and auxiliary drive configuration. MAN D08, D20, D26 and D38 engines, for example, use water pumps with specific pulley connections, belt drives or gear drives, depending on the engine configuration. On Mercedes engines such as OM 904, OM 906, OM 457, OM 460, OM 471 and OM 473, differences may occur in the pump housing, impeller diameter, bearing design, sealing surface and connection for bypass lines.

Water pumps are generally centrifugal pumps with a cast-iron, aluminium or composite pump housing and a metal or plastic impeller. The mechanical shaft seal must withstand coolant pressure, temperature fluctuations and the corrosive effects of aged coolant. Thermostats are wax-element thermostats which, at a specified opening temperature, open the main cooling circuit to the coolant radiator and, where applicable, the oil cooler. Some applications use an integrated thermostat housing with multiple control circuits, bypass channels and temperature sensor positions.

Coolant traces at the water pump weep hole, play on the pump shaft, a grinding bearing noise or unstable belt tracking often indicate worn bearings or a mechanical seal. On belt-driven pumps, belt tensioners, idler pulleys, multi-ribbed belts and pulleys must also be checked. A seized water pump can cause belt slip; a broken drive quickly leads to local overheating of the cylinder head and EGR cooler.

A thermostat that remains closed causes a rapidly rising coolant temperature, a cold radiator and high pressure in the cooling circuits. If it remains open, the engine will not reach sufficient operating temperature, cab interior heating will be inadequate, and regeneration problems or increased diesel consumption may occur. First read out fault codes and live data: compare the coolant temperature before and after the thermostat, the radiator inlet temperature and the fan speed requested by the engine management system. Then measure at identical measuring points using an infrared thermometer; take emissivity into account and avoid measurements on bare metal.

Perform a pressure test on the cooled-down cooling system using the test pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Pressure loss without visible external leakage may indicate leaking pump seals, a defective thermostat housing, coolant pipes or internal engine damage. Also check for coolant contamination, deposits in the expansion tank and insufficient antifreeze/corrosion protection using a refractometer. If in doubt, the thermostat can be removed and tested in a controlled water bath for initial opening, full stroke and closing behaviour.

When replacing a defective water pump, always replace the associated O-rings, flat gaskets and specified mounting bolts. Clean the sealing surfaces without causing grooves; a damaged mating surface will lead to leakage despite a new gasket. Use only coolant meeting the correct manufacturer specification and do not mix incompatible coolant technologies. Bleed the system according to the specified procedure, check the level after the test drive and verify the thermostat opening cycle using a diagnostic tester.
