A shaft within a propshaft assembly is the rotating load-bearing element that transmits torque between the connected components of the driveline. In MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, the propshaft not only connects the gearbox to the differential in the driven axle, but – depending on the vehicle configuration – also a transfer case, distribution gearbox, PTO drive, tandem axle drive or front axle drive. The propshaft must reliably transmit engine torque under varying angles, vehicle movements and loads without torsional vibrations, imbalance or excessive play.
Propshaft shafts generally consist of a solid or hollow steel tube with welded yokes, flange connections or slip joints. Hollow versions combine high torsional stiffness with low rotating weight; this limits inertia forces and critical resonances at high speeds. Tube diameter, wall thickness, length, balancing quality, flange pitch circle and spline profiles determine the permissible operating load and transmissible torque.
Vehicles with a long wheelbase, tandem axles or multiple driven axles often use two-piece or three-piece propshafts, optionally with a centre bearing. For example, a first propshaft connects the gearbox output to a transfer case, while subsequent propshafts connect the distribution gearbox to the differential of the first rear axle and then to the second rear axle. In 4x4, 6x6 or 8x8 configurations, a separate propshaft can also connect the distribution gearbox to the driven front axle. A PTO can furthermore drive a hydraulic pump, compressor or other auxiliary units via a separate propshaft.
Propshaft shafts must always be identified using the chassis number. This requires checking the transmission version, axle ratio, wheelbase, flange type, length in the compressed position and any centre bearing arrangement.
Typical fault symptoms include vibrations during acceleration, droning noises at a certain engine speed, knocking during load changes and metallic clicking when pulling away. A distorted propshaft often causes speed-dependent vibrations, whereas play in the slip joint or universal joints is more likely to be noticeable as knocking when accelerating and engine braking. Corrosion on the sliding splines, damaged balance weights and dented tubes also lead to imbalance.
First check whether the flanges are correctly centred and whether the mounting bolts are tightened to the specified torque. Then measure the radial runout of the propshaft tube using a dial indicator; measure at several points while slowly rotating the shaft. Compare the measured runout with the vehicle specifications. Also check the axial travel of the splines: a seized slip joint can transmit axial forces to the gearbox, centre bearing or differential during suspension compression and rebound.
Inspect universal joints for noticeable radial play, stiff rotation and discolouration caused by overheating. On a two-piece design, the centre bearing rubber must not be cracked, sagged or detached from the metal support ring. After removal, check the alignment of the yokes; an incorrect phasing position causes uneven angular velocities and torsional vibrations.
Always replace a cracked, dented or visibly bent shaft completely; straightening is not a reliable repair for a balanced rotating component. Also replace damaged flanges, worn slip joints and universal joints with pitting in the needle bearing cups. The propshaft must be balanced after every repair. Install the propshaft in the marked position, observe the original phasing position and clean all mating surfaces before tightening the flange connections.
After installation, a test drive under load is essential. If a vibration remains, also check the engine and transmission mounts, the alignment of the gearbox and differential, as well as the bearings in the transfer case or driven rear axle.
