U-joint

A universal joint forms the movable pivot in the propshaft between the gearbox, intermediate shaft and differential. It allows angular displacement when the driveline moves due to suspension travel, axle load or chassis flexing, while reliably transmitting drive torque. MAN and Mercedes truck, bus and van propshafts use single universal joints, double universal joints and versions with different yoke, flange and spline connections.

The assembly generally consists of a forged cross pin with four bearing journals, needle bearing cups, needle rollers, sealing rings, retaining clips and, where applicable, a grease nipple. The cups must be fitted into the propshaft yokes with the specified interference fit; an incorrect cup diameter, bearing width or retaining ring position will result in insufficient axial retention and rapid damage. The bolt pattern, centring diameter and flange design of the propshaft must also match. Therefore, always identify universal joints using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient, even if the propshaft appears identical at first glance.

The most common damage is wear to the needle bearings caused by ageing grease, water ingress, corrosion or overloading. Typical fault symptoms include a metallic clicking sound during load changes, knocking when pulling away, vibrations within a specific engine speed range and noticeable play in the propshaft. A seized needle bearing can locally score the cross pin, causing the cup to overheat and the yoke ears to become worn. A torn seal, reddish-brown corrosion dust around the bearing cup or grease forced outwards also indicates a defect.

Greaseable universal joints have a grease nipple in the cross pin or bearing cup and require periodic regreasing with the specified high-pressure grease for needle bearings. Pump in grease until fresh grease is visible at all seals, without damaging the sealing lips through excessive pressure. If grease only emerges from one cup, an internal lubrication channel may be blocked or a bearing cup may already have seized. Maintenance-free universal joints are factory-filled with grease and hermetically sealed. They must not be force-greased; instead, check the seals, radial play and smooth movement. Greaseable and maintenance-free versions are not necessarily interchangeable.

Diagnosis must be carried out with the parking brake applied and the driveline unloaded. First inspect the propshaft for missing balance weights, damaged tubes and signs of contact with chassis components. Then carefully move each yoke in radial and axial directions. Noticeable clicking play or uneven resistance is unacceptable. Use a dial indicator on the propshaft yoke to assess local radial movement and inspect the bearing cups for heat discolouration. Rule out worn centre bearing supports, worn spline connections and incorrect flange centring, as these can cause similar vibration symptoms.

Before dismantling, mark the relative position of the flanges, slip joint and propshaft halves. The phase angle of the yokes and the original balance position are essential: an incorrectly phased or rotated propshaft causes torsional vibrations, noise and premature wear of transmission and differential bearings. Completely remove the retaining clips, press the cups in or out only on the outer edge and support the yoke ears symmetrically. Striking with a hammer can deform the yoke and damage the bearing race.

Clean the retaining ring grooves, check the yoke bores for ovality and fit new sealing rings and retaining clips. After installation, the joint must move freely through its full angular range without binding, with the cups correctly positioned axially. Check the specified tightening torque of the flange bolts, use new bolts and locking devices where required, and carry out a vibration check under load after a test drive. A widely available stock of propshaft parts and technical support with identification help to minimise downtime, but correct chassis number verification remains the basis of every durable repair.
