Rear axle housing for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

The rear axle housing forms the load-bearing casing of the driven rear axle. It supports the differential housing, guides the axle shafts to the wheel hubs and absorbs high vertical, torsional and longitudinal forces through the axle tubes, spring seats, air spring mounts and torque rod mountings. On MAN TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3, Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic vehicles, as well as buses such as the MAN Lion’s City, Mercedes Citaro and Neoplan coaches, rear axle housings vary considerably in track width, hub reduction, load capacity, brake configuration and suspension mounting points. The correct axle version is also essential for vans such as the MAN TGE and Mercedes Sprinter.

A rear axle housing must always be identified using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based on the model name alone is never sufficient. Check whether it is configured for single or twin tyres, any planetary hub reductions, the brake specification and the wheel suspension mounting points. An apparently identical axle housing may have different axle tubes, bearing seats or mounting dimensions.

Construction, compatibility and critical fitments

The rear axle housing generally consists of a central cast or welded differential section with steel axle tubes. On heavy-duty driven axles, the ends are machined for the installation of hub housings, wheel bearings, brake backing plates and seals. The bore and fit for bearing cups, axle shaft guides and differential mounts must remain dimensionally accurate. Oval bearing seats, damaged threaded holes or distorted flange faces cause premature wear of roller bearings, oil seals and gear transmissions.

On vehicles with hub reduction, such as certain MAN TGS, TGX and Mercedes Arocs or Actros versions, the rear axle housing is designed for higher drive torques at the wheel side. On city buses and distribution vehicles, frequent stopping, high cyclic loads and intensive braking are more significant factors. The choice therefore depends not only on the vehicle series, but also on axle load, wheelbase, brake type, air suspension or steel suspension and the exact driveline configuration.

Typical damage patterns and targeted diagnosis

Cracks often develop around spring seats, air spring brackets, torque rod mountings, stabiliser mounts and the transition between the central housing and the axle tube. In construction traffic, overloading or impact with kerbs can bend axle tubes. The consequences include uneven tyre wear, incorrect wheel alignment, leaking hub seals and accelerated damage to wheel bearings or axle shafts. Oil leakage around the differential cover, pinion flange or hub side may also indicate a damaged housing, porous weld or distorted sealing surface.

Practical inspection before replacement

First clean the complete axle thoroughly and locate leaks using dye in the transmission oil or UV detection. Then inspect weld seams and load-bearing areas visually and, if in doubt, using magnetic particle testing or dye penetrant testing. Measure the straightness of the axle tubes using an alignment jig, dial gauge or laser system; compare the position of hub faces and suspension mounting points on the left and right according to the vehicle specification. Measure bearing seats for ovality and taper using an internal micrometer. Also check the differential housing for damaged mounting surfaces and misalignment of the bearing caps.

Repair, replacement and reliable installation

A rear axle housing with surface corrosion or repairable thread damage can sometimes be reconditioned, provided that all dimension-critical areas remain within tolerance. Cracks in load-bearing areas, bent axle tubes, worn bearing fits or distorted mounting points generally make replacement technically and economically justified. Welding repairs without the specified material procedure, preheating and dimensional inspection are not recommended: they can cause residual stresses and alignment errors.

When replacing the housing, fit new seals, check the condition of the wheel bearings and inspect the transmission oil for metal particles. Adjust differential bearings, gear backlash and pinion preload strictly in accordance with the axle manufacturer's specifications.
