Wheel bolts and wheel nuts form the safety-critical clamping connection between the rim, brake disc or brake drum and the rear axle wheel hub. On MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, they must not only support the vehicle weight, but also withstand high alternating loads caused by drive torque, braking forces, cornering and thermal expansion. An incorrect bolt-nut combination, incorrect tightening procedure or damaged fit can result in loose wheels, worn rim holes, broken wheel studs and serious damage to wheel hubs or planetary hub reductions.
Wheel bolts, wheel studs and nuts vary according to axle version, hub design, rim type and vehicle generation. They are used on, among others, MAN F2000, TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3, and on Mercedes LN, SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic. Specifications for MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach and Neoplan coaches, as well as Mercedes Citaro, Intouro and Tourismo, also depend on the specific axle and hub variant. Vans such as the MAN TGE and Mercedes Sprinter generally use different thread sizes, load capacities and centring systems from those found on heavy driven rear axles.
Important parameters include thread diameter, pitch, thread length, strength class, shank length, knurled fit of press-in wheel bolts, seat type and spanner size. Many heavy commercial vehicles use wheel nuts with a flat washer, spherical seat or conical seat; these are not interchangeable. A nut with an incorrect seat concentrates the clamping force on a small surface area, which can cause rims to crack or preload to be lost. Left-hand and right-hand threaded connections may also be found on older designs.
Always identify wheel bolts and nuts using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison, measuring only the thread diameter or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check whether the rear axle is fitted with steel or aluminium rims, twin-wheel configuration, brake drums or brake discs and, where applicable, hub reduction.
Typical faults include corroded threads, stretched wheel bolts, rounded nut profiles, damaged knurling, hairline cracks in the flange and seized seats. Rust between the rim, hub face and brake drum causes settling loss after installation. This reduces the preload force, even if the nuts were originally tightened to the correct torque. Loose wheels can often be identified by knocking noises, black oxidation marks around the bolt holes, oval rim holes, metal dust or visible movement between the rim and hub.
Park the vehicle safely, unload the relevant wheel and first inspect the rim, hub face and centring lip for damage. Clean the fastening completely; lubricants on threads or seating surfaces are only permitted where explicitly specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Measure the thread using a thread gauge and check the bolt length, undamaged threads and the knurl diameter of press-in wheel bolts. Inspect wheel studs for stretching: a visibly narrowed shank, damaged first threads or nuts that screw on unusually easily require replacement.
Never replace damaged wheel bolts with versions of a different strength class or shank length. In the event of a loose wheel connection, the nuts, the affected rim and the wheel hub must generally also be carefully assessed. Fit the rim clean and flush, tighten the nuts in a crosswise pattern in several stages and use only a calibrated torque wrench set to the specified tightening torque. After the prescribed driving distance, recheck the tightening torque and any signs of settling. Controlled stock availability and technical identification by chassis number help minimise downtime during safety-critical rear axle repairs.
