Rims form the load-bearing connection between tyres, wheel hubs and braking systems. On MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, they must not only support the vehicle weight but also withstand high radial and axial forces caused by loads, cornering, braking and road irregularities. Choosing the correct rim is therefore essential for driving stability, tyre wear, brake cooling and the service life of wheel bearings, wheel bolts and hubs. For MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX and TG3, Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic, as well as Sprinter, TGE, Citaro, Tourismo and Neoplan buses, rims vary considerably depending on axle load, hub design and brake configuration.
Professional rims are available as steel disc wheels and aluminium wheels. Steel versions are robust and used in construction, distribution and waste transport. Minor rim edge damage on steel wheels can sometimes be repaired. Aluminium wheels offer lower unsprung weight, favourable heat dissipation and a presentable finish, but require careful inspection for corrosion, cracking and damage to the bolt seats.
The correct version is determined by factors including rim diameter, rim width, bolt pattern, centre bore diameter, offset (ET value), load capacity, bolt hole design and the shape of the mounting face. Commercial vehicles commonly use 17.5-, 19.5- and 22.5-inch tubeless rims, alongside specific versions for light vans. The conical or spherical seat of the wheel bolts must match the rim exactly; an incorrect bolt-seat combination causes insufficient clamping force, loose wheels or elongated bolt holes.
Rims must always be identified using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Within a single Actros, TGS, Sprinter or TGE range, the front axle, driven rear axle, hub reduction, brake discs, brake drums and permitted axle loads may result in different rim specifications.
A bent rim often causes steering vibrations, tyre cupping, irregular tread wear or vibrations that increase within a certain speed range. First inspect the tyre for carcass damage, local height variations and incorrect balancing before rejecting the rim. Then measure radial and axial runout using a dial indicator on a cleaned, correctly centred hub or balancing machine. Compare the measured deviation with the vehicle specifications and also assess the contact surface against the hub.
Inspect the rim flange on both sides for dents, cracks and damage around the bead seats. Especially on tubeless rims, corrosion and pitting can cause air loss, even when the tyre and valve appear intact. Examine the disc section for hairline cracks around the wheel bolt holes and check whether the bolt seats have not been elongated due to driving with insufficient tightening torque. Clean the hub face, centre bore and rim contact surface mechanically, without removing material. Dirt, paint build-up or corrosion flakes between the hub and rim cause lateral runout and loss of preload in the wheel bolts.
Replace rims immediately in the event of cracks, deformed bolt holes, severe corrosion in the bead seat or runout exceeding the permitted limit. Straightening or welding safety-critical areas, such as the disc section, bolt circle and rim bead, is not a technically sound solution without a validated repair procedure. When a rim is damaged, also inspect the wheel bearings, hub, wheel bolts, nuts and tyres: a severe impact can cause more damage than just a bent rim flange.
Only install rims with the correct load capacity for the fitted axle and tyre. Use suitable wheel bolts or nuts, tighten them in a crosswise pattern to the specified torque and carry out a follow-up check after initial use. Technically inspected stock and rapid availability help minimise downtime caused by wheel and tyre damage.
