Springs for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans
Where small coil springs are fitted

This category covers small coil springs fitted inside components to return a part to its original position after it has been operated. Examples of where they are fitted include:

• Door handle

• Door lock

• Interior buttons

• Gearbox shift tower

• Engine valve mechanism

• Bonnet or tailgate

• Windscreen wiper mechanisms

• Storage compartment latch

• Flap or hatch hinge

• Switch or push button

• Pedal mechanism

• Seat adjustment mechanism

• Cover latch

Depending on where it is fitted, a spring can return a button to its original position, hold a pawl in place, keep a latch under tension or press a moving part against a stop.

Identifying the right spring for the component

Specifications vary by component and application. Identify the part using the vehicle’s chassis number, then check where the spring is fitted and the design of the mechanism. A visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Compare the spring’s dimensions, wire diameter, coil shape and mounting points. Also check whether it is a compression spring, extension spring or torsion spring: these types serve different purposes and are not interchangeable. Springs are generally made from hardened spring steel; surface treatment and corrosion protection affect their fatigue life.

Recognising wear and diagnosing the cause

Typical faults include a broken coil, corrosion, deformation or a spring that has lost its elasticity. Possible symptoms include:

• A door handle that does not return to its original position

• A lock or latch that does not engage properly

• A button that sticks

• A gear shift mechanism that does not return to its starting position

• A flap that does not close properly

Check the mechanism and the area where the spring is fitted for breakage, dirt and wear. Inspect the mounting points and moving parts as well: a seized pawl or damaged guide can cause the same symptoms as a faulty spring.

Replacing a spring safely

Even small springs can fly out during disassembly. Check how the spring is secured before taking the mechanism apart, and prevent parts from coming loose unexpectedly. Fit the replacement spring in the same position, then check that the component moves freely and returns to its starting position.
