Bare cab parts for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

Bare cab parts form the load-bearing body structure to which doors, windows, interior panels, electrical wiring harnesses, roof modules and cab equipment are fitted. This category includes complete cab shells, cab frames, roof panels, rear walls, floor panels, A-, B- and C-pillars, sills, bulkheads and structural mounting parts. They are relevant for MAN F8, F90, F2000, L2000, TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX, TG3 and TGE, as well as Mercedes LN, SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs, Econic, Sprinter and Vito. Structural cab or front-end parts may also be vehicle-specific for MAN Lion’s City and Lion’s Coach, Mercedes Citaro and Tourismo, and Neoplan coaches.

A bare cab part must always be identified using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based on the model name alone is never sufficient. The same vehicle series may differ in wheelbase, roof height, steering position, cab suspension, door configuration, windscreen version, mirror mounts, sensor positions and pre-installation mountings for air conditioning or driver assistance systems.

Compatibility, construction and fitment of cab shells

Truck, bus and van cabs generally consist of galvanised high-strength steel, aluminium sheet metal or a combination of steel structures with composite outer panels. On modern Actros, Arocs, TGX and TGS generations, fitment, corrosion protection and dimensional accuracy are more important than appearance alone. Deviations in pillars, the bulkhead or floor can lead to stress in windscreens, poorly closing doors, leaks or incorrect positioning of dashboard supports and wiring harness pass-throughs.

Before ordering, check whether the cab is suitable for the fitted tilting mechanism, front cab mounting points, rear locks and the cab springs or shock absorbers used. For partial repairs, measure the diagonals of the door opening, the distance between hinge points and the height differences between the left and right sills. Use a body measuring system, reference points from the repair data and a calibrated measuring bar or laser system. With structural parts, tolerances of just a few millimetres are sufficient to affect door gaps, windscreen fitment or the position of the cab on the chassis.

New, used and repairable cab structures

Light surface corrosion, minor dents outside load-bearing areas or paint damage can generally be repaired after controlled sanding, rust removal, priming and repainting. However, replace parts with buckled pillars, cracked weld seams, deformed hinge reinforcements, corrosion around mounting points or deformed cab locks. Straightening work on high-strength steel without the prescribed pulling method can compromise material strength and energy absorption in a collision. Welding work is only appropriate when carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's body repair instructions, using the correct welding method, corrosion protection and restoration of sealing seams.

Typical damage patterns and systematic diagnosis

Common damage results from frontal collisions, towing damage, contact with loading bays, falling loads, stone chips and prolonged exposure to moisture. Look for cracks in floor panels, rust formation beneath window edges, detached sealant seams, deformed roof edges and dented sills. On older MAN F2000 or Mercedes SK cabs, corrosion in floor structures, mudguard areas and hinge reinforcements is a genuine concern. On newer vehicles, damage to mounting areas more often causes problems with radar brackets, camera systems, wiring harness clips or pass-throughs for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning).

Start the diagnosis with a visual inspection of weld points, sealant seams, corrosion blisters and mounting surfaces. Then check door gaps all around using feeler gauges and compare the left side with the right. Test the closing force of the doors and inspect whether lock strikers, hinges and striker plates have not been artificially adjusted to compensate for body deviations. After a collision, always carry out a diagonal measurement of cab openings and check the squareness between the windscreen frame, roof edge and A-pillars. Water leaks can be detected using a controlled spray test or smoke test, in which air or smoke escaping along sealant seams and pass-throughs becomes visible.

Replacement advice for safe and durable installation

When replacing a bare cab or structural panel, all components to be transferred must be inventoried beforehand: doors, windows, dashboard supports, seat mountings, insulation, wiring harnesses, air lines, windscreen wiper systems and cab locks. Damaged fastening bolts, pop rivets, structural adhesive joints and sealing rubbers must not be reused when the manufacturer specifies replacement. Use body sealant and corrosion protection compatible with galvanised steel, aluminium and the existing paint system; incorrect products can cause galvanic corrosion or separating seams.

First install the cab without stress on the chassis and suspension mounting points, then adjust the doors and locks, and only then fit the windows and interior components. Correct fitment reduces wind noise, water ingress, fatigue cracks and premature wear of rubber seals. For faster repairs, cab parts can also be prepared in colour.
