Tilting mechanism

The cab tilt mechanism allows the cab to be tilted forwards in a controlled manner, providing access to the engine compartment, cooling system, main electrical components and drivetrain. Depending on the vehicle specification, the system consists of mechanical or hydraulic tilt cylinders, hand pumps or electrohydraulic pump units, hinge points, locking pins, pipework, non-return valves and safety locks. On MAN F90, F2000, TGA, TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX and TG3, and Mercedes LN, SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Antos, Arocs and Econic vehicles, mounting points, cylinder lengths, stroke, connections and locking configurations vary considerably. MAN vehicles include XL, XLX, XXL, GM, GN and GX cabs, while Mercedes uses ClassicSpace, StreamSpace, BigSpace, GigaSpace, L, M and S cabs, among others. Parts must therefore always be identified using the vehicle chassis number; visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

A hydraulic cab tilt mechanism generally uses hydraulic oil supplied via a hand pump or electric pump to one or two tilt cylinders. The piston rods must withstand both the cab weight and dynamic loads at the beginning and end of the tilting movement. Trouble-free operation requires correct bore and rod clearances, intact cylinder seals, corrosion-free hinge pins and adequate lubrication of pivot points. Pins and bushes must retain the specified clearance: excessive radial play causes the cab to tilt unevenly, knocking on rough roads and increased load on the rear locking mechanism.

When selecting parts, consider not only the vehicle series, but also whether the pump is mounted on the left or right, single- or double-acting cylinders, stroke length, centre-to-centre distance of the mounting eyes, diameter of the hinge pins and type of hydraulic connection. A cylinder with an apparently identical length may fail to lift the cab sufficiently or overload the hinge geometry due to a different stroke, end cushioning or operating pressure. On vehicles with longer cabs, such as MAN TGX XLX and XXL or Mercedes Actros BigSpace and GigaSpace, the load on the lifting system is generally higher than on compact distribution cabs.

A cab that does not rise, or rises only slowly, often indicates a low hydraulic oil level, internal leakage in the pump, worn non-return valves, air in the system or leaking cylinder seals. First check the cab lock: a rear lock that is not fully released can place severe strain on the hydraulic system without the cab moving. Then inspect the piston rods for pitting corrosion, scratches and bending. Damage to the chrome-plated surface quickly destroys new seals and generally requires replacement of the complete cylinder.

1. Park on level ground, apply the parking brake and secure the cab according to the vehicle procedure.
2. Check the hydraulic oil level with the system at rest and inspect the oil for water, metal particles or significant discolouration.
3. Inspect the pump, hydraulic lines, couplings and cylinders for external leakage, especially around pressure connections and rod seals.
4. Measure play in hinge pins and bushes using a dial gauge while slightly relieving the load on the cab. Compare the left and right sides; uneven movement indicates worn mountings or a bent cylinder.
5. On electrohydraulic systems, check the supply voltage, earth connection, fuses and relays under load. Voltage drop causes the pump to run slowly, which may incorrectly be diagnosed as a hydraulic fault.

Replace a tilt cylinder in the event of visible rod damage, internal pressure loss, leaking seals or damaged mounting eyes. Always replace worn pins and bushes as a set for each hinge point; fitting only a new pin in an oval bush will not restore the correct fit. Flush contaminated hydraulic circuits and renew the hydraulic oil before fitting a new pump or cylinder. Then bleed the system by performing several complete tilting movements in accordance with the workshop manual.

Never force a cab using external lifting equipment when the cause is unknown: a seized lock, faulty safety valve or misaligned hinge can cause structural damage to the cab frame and chassis mountings. Correctly selected parts with a verified fit minimise downtime and ensure that truck maintenance can be carried out safely.
