Accelerator pedal

The accelerator pedal translates the driver's foot movement into an acceleration request for the engine control unit. In modern MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, this is usually done via an electronic pedal module with redundant position sensors. Depending on the year of manufacture and vehicle series, this module uses non-contact Hall sensors or dual potentiometer tracks, supplied with a reference voltage of typically 5 V. The two signal tracks have a predetermined voltage ratio, allowing the engine control unit to immediately detect deviations as a plausibility fault.

Accelerator pedals differ in connector pin assignment, number of pins, sensor curve, pedal travel, mounting points, floor mat guidance and communication with the vehicle electronics. Older MAN F90, F2000, M2000 and L2000 or Mercedes LN, Ecoliner, SK, TN and Vario vehicles may feature mechanical controls, cable transmissions or simpler electrical circuits. Newer MAN TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX, TG3 and TGE, as well as Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs, Antos, Econic, Sprinter, Vito and Citan, generally use an electronic accelerator pedal module.

Pedal modules may also differ by chassis and software variant on MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach and Intercity, Mercedes Citaro, Intouro and Tourismo, and Neoplan Cityliner, Skyliner and Tourliner vehicles. Parts must therefore always be identified using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison, selection based solely on the model name or comparing only the connector is never sufficient.

A faulty accelerator pedal does not always result in a complete lack of acceleration. Common fault symptoms include limited power output, limp mode, delayed throttle response, irregular engine speed, cruise control disengaging, or fault messages relating to accelerator pedal position, reference voltage and signal correlation. In practice, wear of the internal sensor tracks, broken wires near the pedal bracket, moisture in the connector, oxidised connection pins and mechanical obstruction caused by dirt or an incorrectly fitted floor mat are major causes.

First check that the pedal moves freely throughout its full travel and returns correctly against the mechanical stop. Then inspect the housing, mounting bolts, wiring and connector for play, damage, corrosion and moisture ingress. Next, read out fault codes and live data using a suitable diagnostic tester. Compare both pedal positions: they must change smoothly, without dropouts, jumps or mutual plausibility deviations. Measure the ground, 5 V reference voltage and signal voltages at the connector using a multimeter or, in the event of intermittent faults, an oscilloscope. The exact idle and end values are vehicle-specific; therefore, assess them according to the wiring diagram and manufacturer data.

Replace an accelerator pedal module when the sensor values are not linear, the two signal tracks are outside tolerance, or the mechanical bearing and pedal arm are deformed. Do not repair encapsulated sensor elements: incorrect redundancy may cause limp mode again. Before removal, disconnect the power supply according to the workshop procedure, remove the floor mat and relieve the wiring harness so that the connector is not under tension. Fit the new module without stress on the original mounting surfaces; a bracket fitted at an angle may affect pedal travel and ergonomics.

After installation, clear the fault codes, check the live data again and carry out a road test to verify idle behaviour, acceleration, kickdown function where fitted, and cruise control. Some vehicle variants require a basic setting or software learning procedure. A correctly functioning pedal module prevents unwanted power limitation and helps minimise downtime; technical support with chassis-number identification also prevents incorrect deliveries.
