Air cooled oil cooler and line

Air-cooled oil coolers transfer heat from engine oil, transmission oil or hydraulic oil directly to the ambient air. Unlike oil-to-coolant heat exchangers, they have no coolant connections. They use airflow from vehicle movement, a vehicle cooling fan or a separate electric fan. On MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, the connected circuit determines which cooler and lines are required. Insufficient heat dissipation reduces lubricant viscosity and can accelerate wear on plain bearings, gears or hydraulic pumps.

Always identify parts using the vehicle chassis number, supplemented by identification of the transmission, hydraulic system or any retrofitted bodywork. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. For example, on MAN TGS vehicles with D26 engines or Mercedes Actros vehicles with OM 471 engines, the engine family alone does not confirm that a separate air-cooled engine oil cooler is fitted. First check the circuit layout and factory specification.

Common designs include aluminium plate-and-fin and tube-and-fin coolers. Selection parameters include heat dissipation capacity, flow capacity, maximum working pressure, pressure spikes, temperature rating and permissible pressure drop at the specified fluid viscosity. A hydraulic return-line cooler is not necessarily suitable for a high-pressure line. The core surface area, fin spacing and fan characteristics must also match the available airflow.

For lines, check the internal diameter, connection thread, sealing seat and fit of push-fit couplings. Steel or aluminium pipes and pressure-reinforced flexible hoses have different support and bend radius requirements. The hose material and seals must withstand the specified engine oil, transmission oil or hydraulic oil as well as the maximum operating temperature.

Typical faults include stone impact damage, corroded connections, fatigue cracks around mounting points and leaking crimped hose fittings. Dirty fins reduce air-side heat transfer; kinked hoses or detached inner linings restrict fluid flow. Overheating at low vehicle speeds is more likely to indicate insufficient forced airflow, while problems under sustained load can also result from internal blockages or insufficient cooling capacity.

1. Identify and inspect: check the fluid level using the specified temperature procedure. Clean suspected leak areas and inspect connections, chafing points, rubber mounts and the space between successive heat exchangers. Only work on connections once the circuit has cooled down and been depressurised.
2. Check the air side: assess the fins, air guides and fan operation. For electric fans, measure the supply voltage and voltage drop under load; check fan control and current draw in accordance with the vehicle documentation.
3. Measure the temperature profile: record inlet and outlet temperatures using contact probes at a defined load and ambient temperature. Do not use infrared measurements on bare aluminium without emissivity correction. A large temperature difference does not prove effective cooling: insufficient flow can produce the same result.
4. Measure hydraulic resistance: take measurements upstream and downstream of the cooler using suitable pressure gauges or pressure transducers. Compare the pressure difference at a known fluid temperature and rotational speed with the manufacturer's values. Check any thermostatic bypass valves before condemning the heat exchanger.

Replace leaking or structurally damaged coolers and hoses; also address the underlying cause, such as vibration, preload on the lines or excessive pressure. Fit new seals of the specified type, keep connections clean and use the specified tightening torque. Route flexible lines without twisting, leaving sufficient clearance from exhaust parts and moving components.

Following internal transmission or pump damage, metal particles may remain in narrow cooling passages. Therefore, follow the manufacturer's instructions for flushing or mandatory replacement. Fill with fluid of the correct specification, bleed the circuit according to the prescribed procedure and recheck the level, leaks, pressure difference and temperature under operating load.
