Steps are an essential safety and ergonomic component of the bodywork. This category covers steps fitted in or beneath the step boxes. They provide drivers, mechanics and passengers with stable access to the cab. On MAN and Mercedes vehicles, steps are used on trucks including MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX and TG3, and Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic. The correct part must always be identified using the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient, as step shapes, mounting points, dimensions and anti-slip versions may differ by chassis variant.

Steps are generally made from galvanised steel, stainless steel, aluminium or reinforced plastic composites. Steel versions offer high dimensional stability and impact resistance, but require intact corrosion protection. Aluminium steps combine low weight with good corrosion resistance, while plastic variants are often integrated into step boxes, mudguard sections or cab trim. The tread surface features raised patterns, perforations, rubber anti-slip mats or an extruded profile to maintain sufficient grip in rain, snow, oil or mud contamination.

When selecting a step, check not only its length, width and height, but also the position of mounting holes, brackets, clip nuts, hinge points and the connection to the step box. On trucks with air-suspended cabs, the step construction may also differ from that of a rigidly mounted cab version. Also check whether the part is intended for the left- or right-hand side, the upper or lower entry step, and a version with or without integrated lighting, reflectors or covers.

The most common defects are dented tread surfaces, cracked plastic, bent support brackets, worn mounting holes and detached anti-slip inserts. Especially in distribution transport and construction haulage, steps are exposed to thousands of entry cycles, splashing road salt water, stone chipping and contact with kerbs or loading docks. Corrosion often develops at folded edges, weld seams and areas where the coating has been damaged by stone chipping. On aluminium components, galvanic corrosion can occur when moisture and salt remain trapped between aluminium and steel mounting brackets.

First clean the tread surface and mounting area so that cracks and corrosion become visible. Then check the step for deflection using a straightedge and compare the left and right sides where a symmetrical version is fitted. Measure play at the mounting points; elongated holes or loose clip nuts cause creaking noises and movement when entering the cab. Also inspect the step box behind it, the cab bracket and chassis bolted connections for deformation. On trucks with illuminated entry steps, check connectors, cable insulation and earth points for moisture ingress and increased contact resistance.

A step with sharp edges, severe corrosion, a cracked support structure or insufficient anti-slip function must be replaced rather than repaired cosmetically. Do not straighten a mounting bracket if it is bent around a bolt hole or weld joint: local material fatigue may cause it to break again. Use new fastening materials if bolts are corroded, stretched or damaged. Observe the specified tightening torques and, where required, apply anti-corrosion assembly paste between aluminium and steel parts.

After installation, check the clearance in relation to tyres, mudguards, doors and cab tilting. Test the step under static load and ensure that no movement, contact noise or interference occurs. A correctly fitting step reduces the risk of falls, prevents consequential damage to step boxes and keeps the truck operational.
