Front axle mudguard fasteners include mounting brackets, clamps, bolts, nuts, body washers, plastic clips and locking devices. These components ensure that front axle mudguards remain correctly positioned in relation to the tyres, chassis, cab and underbody. A front axle mudguard that is only slightly loose can quickly tear further due to vibrations, airflow and thrown-up debris. Correct fastening is therefore essential for protection against water, mud and stone chips, as well as for legal compliance and road safety.
MAN and Mercedes use different fastening systems depending on the vehicle series, axle configuration, front axle width, chassis structure and application. A fastener for a MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX or TG3 is not automatically interchangeable with that of older F90, F2000, M2000 or L2000 vehicles. The same applies to Mercedes LN, SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Antos, Arocs and Econic. Clips, screw connections and front axle mudguard fasteners also vary by chassis version on MAN TGE and Mercedes Sprinter, Vito, Viano, V-Class, Citan, TN and Vario vehicles.
On buses and coaches such as the MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach, Intercity, Mercedes Citaro, Intouro and Tourismo, or Neoplan Cityliner and Tourliner, front axle mudguards are often connected to specific chassis structures, wheel arch liners and load-bearing brackets. mounting points may differ due to air suspension, steering axle configuration, greater wheel steering angles or low-floor applications. Parts must therefore always be identified using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based on the model name alone is never sufficient.
Typical faults include broken plastic clips, enlarged mounting holes, cracked mounting eyes, corroded steel brackets, loose nuts and bent supports after contact with a kerb or off-road obstacle. On vehicles used in construction, waste collection or distribution operations, mud, road salt and stone chips place additional strain on mounting points. Corrosion between a steel bracket and an aluminium chassis component can also result in poor fitment and reduced clamping force.
First check the front axle mudguard for play while the vehicle is safely stationary. Compare the clearance between the tyre and mudguard on the left and right sides, both with the wheels straight ahead and at full lock. Look for rubbing marks on the tyre sidewall, damage to air bellows, brake lines, ABS sensor wiring or wheel arch liners. Then inspect all mounting eyes for oval holes, hairline cracks and material fatigue. If in doubt, measure the bolt diameter, thread pitch, bracket thickness and centre-to-centre distance of the mounting holes with a vernier caliper.
Do not replace only the visible bolt or clip when the fastening has failed. Also inspect the mudguard bracket, body washer, spacer bush and adjacent mounting surface. A new bolt in an enlarged mounting eye does not provide a durable repair. When mudguard brackets are cracked, replacement is generally more reliable than welding, especially if the crack originates from a loaded mounting hole.
Use fastening materials with the specified strength class, corrosion protection and fit. Galvanised steel bolts, stainless steel fasteners, plastic expansion clips and rubber-metal bushes each have a specific function; combining them at random can cause galvanic corrosion, overloading or loosening. Clean threads and contact surfaces, replace deformed washers and use only specified locknuts or thread-locking compound. Tighten the connections to the manufacturer-specific torque: too little torque causes loosening, while too much can dent mudguard brackets or crack clips.
Correct fitment of mudguard brackets and fastening kits limits rework and prevents unplanned downtime. For vehicles used intensively, it is advisable to include front axle mudguard fasteners in every periodic chassis and body inspection.
