Bolts, spacers and nuts for MAN / Mercedes trucks and buses

Miscellaneous fasteners include bolts, nuts, studs, washers, locking plates, pins, rivets and plastic clips. They serve different purposes: a bolted joint must maintain its preload, while a clip usually holds a cover in position without bearing a significant mechanical load. Do not select a fastener based on thread diameter alone. Strength grade, thread pitch, shank length, grip length, head shape, corrosion protection and locking method all determine whether a part is suitable.

These distinctions matter for chassis and body connections on vehicles such as the MAN TGL and TGX or Mercedes Atego and Actros, as well as buses such as the MAN Lion's City and Mercedes Citaro and vans such as the TGE and Sprinter. Engine fasteners on MAN D08 and D26 engines or Mercedes OM 936 and OM 471 engines may require different lengths, coatings or a specified tightening procedure. Always identify parts using the vehicle’s chassis number. Visual comparison or selection by model name alone is never sufficient: specifications and mounting points can differ even within the same series.

Loose bolted joints can be identified by fretting: dark wear debris around contact surfaces, enlarged holes or recurring play. Rust, damaged threads, rounded heads and broken studs often indicate moisture exposure, overloading or previous assembly with incorrect preload. On plastic clips, broken retaining tabs and loss of spring tension are typical causes of rattling panels. Do not simply replace the visible fastener: also check the contact surface and the internal thread it engages.

Take a step-by-step approach to diagnosis. First, locate the joint using the vehicle documentation and check for movement or deformation. Then measure the outside diameter with a caliper and determine the thread pitch with a thread gauge. For bolts, also check the length, unthreaded shank and bearing surface under the head. For rivets, compare the shank diameter and required grip range with the material thickness. Inspect holes for ovality and internal threads for stripping. If a stud has broken, assess how much material surrounds the threaded hole before drilling it out so the original fit can be retained.

Fit only the specified strength grade and finish; a grade 8.8 bolt cannot be substituted for a grade 10.9 bolt without assessing its suitability. Pay attention to material combinations too: stainless steel in contact with uncoated steel can promote galvanic corrosion when moisture is present. Clean threaded holes and contact surfaces, but do not remove any specified coating. Use a calibrated torque wrench and follow the vehicle-specific tightening instructions for dry or lubricated threads. A change in friction changes the preload achieved at the same tightening torque.

Before reusing torque-to-yield bolts, self-locking nuts or locking plates, check whether the manufacturer specifies them for single use. Never use a longer bolt without checking the available thread depth: a bolt that bottoms out in the hole will not clamp the parts reliably. After fitting, check that the joint sits flush and that cables, lines and moving parts have adequate clearance. This helps prevent a small fastening error from leading to leaks, vibration damage or downtime.
