In vehicles with drum brakes, slack adjusters form the mechanical link between the brake chamber and the brake camshaft. They are used exclusively in drum brake systems and not in disc brake systems. In many MAN and Mercedes applications, this component directly determines how efficiently braking force is built up and how correctly the brake shoe travel is utilised. In practice, a malfunctioning slack adjuster is rarely an isolated issue: a seized brake camshaft, worn splines, incorrect adjustment or insufficient air pressure can also cause the same symptoms. Correct diagnosis is therefore essential before replacing parts. Especially on vehicles used for distribution transport, construction applications or bus operations, frequent braking cycles and contamination lead to faster wear of the adjustment mechanism.

Not every slack adjuster is interchangeable, even when the mounting appears very similar visually. On MAN and Mercedes vehicles, attention must be paid to the brake camshaft splines, arm length, left- or right-hand version, angular position and the difference between manual and automatic slack adjusters. Especially on vehicles with different axle configurations or chassis variants, an apparently minor difference can result in incorrect brake travel or uneven braking performance. Therefore, always identify the correct slack adjuster based on the chassis number.

Typical wear, faults and workshop diagnosis

A worn or defective slack adjuster can often be identified by increasing brake pedal travel, uneven braking deceleration, heat build-up at one wheel position or irregular brake values on the brake test bench. With automatic slack adjusters, the internal adjustment mechanism may no longer compensate correctly due to corrosion, seized dirt or internal wear. 

Other typical faults include play in the splined connection, a seized lever, unevenly worn brake lining or a brake that does not fully release after braking. In the latter case, not only the slack adjuster but the entire system must be checked: brake chamber, return springs, brake camshaft bearings and the free movement of the brake shoes. If only the slack adjuster is replaced without eliminating the cause of excessive resistance, the problem will quickly return.

Preferably replace slack adjusters per axle when wear or loss of function is established, so that braking performance remains equal on both sides. During installation, always check the free travel, lever position and operation of the automatic adjustment system according to the brake system specifications. Lubricate only where prescribed and avoid excessive grease application, as this attracts dust and dirt. After installation, a brake test bench inspection is necessary to confirm correct operation.
