Solenoid valves in the braking system electronically control compressed air or hydraulic pressure. In pneumatic EBS systems (Electronic Braking System), they usually form part of the ABS/EBS modulator (Anti-lock Braking System/Electronic Braking System). However, solenoid valves are also available as separate units, depending on the system configuration and application. The ECU (Electronic Control Unit) activates individual inlet and outlet solenoid valves to rapidly build up, hold or release pressure to the brake cylinders in a controlled manner. This ensures that a wheel remains steerable when lock-up is imminent and that braking force is adjusted per axle or per wheel according to load and grip level.
Separate solenoid valves, also called electromagnetic valves or solenoids, are often mounted throughout the chassis and engine compartment on trucks. Although they are sometimes combined into central modules in modern trucks, individual valves electronically control an airflow in pneumatic systems or a fluid flow in hydraulic, fuel and coolant systems. The ECU sends an electric current to the valve, causing an electromagnet to open or close and initiate a mechanical function. This is used, among other things, for air suspension, axle lift, differential lock, PTO, engine brake, turbo control, the Ad-Blue system and the exhaust system. ABS solenoid valves also operate according to this principle, but are usually integrated into a module.
On MAN TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3 trucks, Lion’s City and Lion’s Coach buses, and Neoplan coaches, solenoid valves are mainly associated with pneumatic ABS, EBS and ASR functions (Anti Slip Regulation). Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs, Antos, Econic, Citaro and Tourismo likewise use various modulator configurations depending on axle specification, EBS generation, trailer control and brake circuit layout. On Mercedes Sprinter, Vito, V-Class and MAN TGE, hydraulic ABS/ESP units (Electronic Stability Program) may contain solenoid valves in the hydraulic control block. The correct solenoid valve, modulator or valve block must always be identified using the chassis number; visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Engine types such as MAN D08, D26 and D38 or Mercedes OM 936, OM 470 and OM 471 do not independently determine the application.
Faulty or contaminated solenoid valves often cause EBS or ABS warnings, a stored fault code for a specific pressure control circuit, uneven braking performance or a vehicle pulling to one side during heavy braking. Other indications include a brake that does not release properly, repeated venting through the modulator exhaust port, delayed pressure build-up or a trailer brake circuit that is not controlled correctly. In hydraulic systems, a hard brake pedal, limited pressure release or intrusive ABS intervention on dry road surfaces may indicate an internally sticking control valve.
Start diagnosis by reading the ECU with suitable diagnostic equipment. Compare the measured wheel speeds, requested brake pressure and actual pressure values for each circuit. Then check the supply voltage, earth connection and wiring harness for corrosion, broken wires and moisture ingress at the connectors. Measure coil resistance and insulation according to the manufacturer's specifications; an open coil, short circuit to earth or abnormal current draw does not confirm a mechanical fault, but neither does it rule one out.
Use calibrated pressure gauges to measure the supply pressure before and the regulated pressure after the modulator during an active test. Compare pressure build-up and pressure release left/right and per axle. Also inspect the air dryer, air tanks and lines: water, compressor oil and corrosion particles can obstruct the narrow valve seats, plungers and seals. An external leak test using leak detection spray around connections and exhaust silencers is essential, but will not reveal internal leakage between the control channels.
Do not replace solenoid valves solely on the basis of a fault code. A malfunction may also be caused by insufficient system pressure, a faulty ABS sensor, a damaged reluctor ring, poor power supply or a seized brake caliper. If electrical measurements, the pressure test and active control confirm a fault, the separate solenoid valve, valve block or complete ABS/EBS modulator is replaced depending on the system. For integrated hydraulic control blocks, repair of individual valves is usually unreliable or not permitted.
Thoroughly clean pneumatic lines and connection ports before installation and immediately seal open circuits. Use only suitable sealing rings and the specified tightening torques; incorrect fitment or damaged threads cause pressure loss. After installation, carry out a leak test, fault code clearing procedure, pressure build-up check and functional brake test. Timely maintenance of air dryers and regular draining of condensate reduce valve contamination and prevent costly downtime. Braem can provide technical support with the correct identification and installation of brake solenoid valves.
