Floor mats

Floor mats protect the cab floor, insulating layers and cable pass-throughs against moisture, sand, road salt, oily contaminants and mechanical wear. In MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, they also contribute to safe pedal operation: a mat that shifts, curls up or gets caught beneath the brake, clutch or accelerator pedal poses an immediate safety risk. For correct selection, floor mats must always be identified using the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient, as the cab floor, pedal assembly, tunnel shape, mounting points and cab version may differ.

Floor mats are vehicle-specific interior components with cut-outs for pedals, the seat console, engine or transmission tunnel, entry steps and retaining clips. For MAN, floor contours differ, for example, between the TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX, as well as within the TG3 series with FM, FN, DN, CC, GN, GM and GX cabs. For Mercedes, the differences between Atego, Actros, Arocs, Antos and Econic are equally relevant; an Actros with a Long GigaSpace cab does not necessarily have the same mat configuration as a version with Long StreamSpace or CompactSpace.

Dimensions and mounting are also critical for vans and passenger transport vehicles. Examples include the MAN TGE, Mercedes Sprinter, Vito, V-Class, Citan and Vario, as well as bus and coach interiors in the MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach, Mercedes Citaro and Tourismo, and Neoplan Cityliner or Tourliner. Separate driver’s mats, two-piece sets, full-length floor mats and mats for passenger or entrance areas are available. Material options range from textile needle-punch mats with a non-slip backing to heavy-duty rubber mats made from SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber), TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride). Rubber and TPE are suitable for intensive use in wet conditions; textile generally offers greater acoustic comfort.

The most common defects are worn-through heel areas, torn edges, detached clips, deformation caused by heat and moisture absorption in the underlying floor covering. On driver’s mats, wear marks mainly develop beneath the heel due to repeated braking and clutch operation. A worn smooth top layer reduces the grip of safety footwear, while a curled edge can press against the pedal mechanism. Therefore, first check that the mat lies completely flat, uses all original mounting points and leaves at least several millimetres of clearance around the full pedal travel.

Remove the floor mat and inspect the cab floor for signs of moisture, corrosion, salt deposits and damaged sound insulation. Then inspect the retaining studs, clips and pass-through holes for tearing. If in doubt, measure the distance between the pedal arms, floor pass-throughs and mounting points; compare these measurements with the vehicle-specific specification. Also check whether water is entering through door seals, the windscreen, the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) condensate drain or cable pass-throughs. A new mat will not solve a leak: without rectifying the source, moisture remains beneath the floor covering and may cause corrosion, unpleasant odours and faults in low-mounted wiring.

Clean and dry the floor completely before fitting new floor mats. Do not use excessive amounts of silicone spray or dashboard shine products on rubber mats; these products may affect the non-slip profile. Position the driver’s mat around the pedals first, then press the clips or bayonet fasteners fully into place. After installation, test the full movement of the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals with the vehicle stationary, including their return to the rest position. On vehicles with frequent entry and exit, such as distribution trucks, city buses and vans, periodic cleaning prevents abrasive sand particles from acting as an abrasive.
