Coolant radiator mounting hardware supports the cooling pack, limits movement and isolates vibrations from the chassis and drivetrain. Radiator supports, mounting brackets, rubber-to-metal mounts, grommets, spacer sleeves and mounting bolts together form a matched mounting system. An incorrect fit or a missing spacer sleeve can place the radiator under stress, resulting in fatigue cracks in mounting lugs or leaks at connections. Recurring radiator damage therefore also calls for an inspection of the mountings.
Always identify parts using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. On MAN TGL, TGS and TGX and Mercedes Atego, Actros and Arocs, radiator dimensions, support frames and mounting points may vary according to year of manufacture, engine variant and cooling pack. Engine families such as MAN D08 and D26 or Mercedes OM 936 and OM 471 help identify the variant, but do not determine the correct radiator mountings on their own. Installation position and cooling configuration are also decisive on buses such as Lion's City and Citaro and vans such as TGE and Sprinter.
Distinguish between load-bearing lower supports, upper locating brackets and resilient mounting elements. Check centre distances, pin and bore diameters, sleeve length, thread pitch and mounting orientation. For rubber-to-metal mounts, the elastomer compound, Shore A hardness and permissible compression determine load capacity and vibration isolation. Metal brackets may be made from coated steel or aluminium, for example; retain the specified material and corrosion protection. Bolt property classes, such as 8.8 or 10.9, are not freely interchangeable. These parts do not carry coolant: mechanical loading, room for thermal expansion and fit are more relevant than operating pressure.
Typical defects include collapsed or split rubber mounts, failed rubber-to-metal bonds, corroded brackets and elongated mounting holes. Recognisable signs include rattling over uneven surfaces, chafing marks on the radiator frame and a change in clearance to the fan shroud. Engine oil contamination can degrade unsuitable elastomers. Simply retightening bolts will not repair a damaged mount and may instead compress the rubber mounting excessively.
- Allow the engine to cool, secure the vehicle against starting and unexpected fan activation, and support the cooling pack before loosening any mountings. Inspect all support points for cracks, corrosion, missing sleeves and signs of contact.
- Check the mountings for relative movement by applying light hand pressure. If necessary, measure suspected play with a dial indicator between the support and frame; distinguish elastic deformation from free play in the mounting holes.
- Measure pin dimensions, bore diameters and spacer sleeves with a vernier calliper. Check support height and alignment against the vehicle specifications. Where accessible, use feeler gauges to detect unwanted metal-to-metal contact; apply only vehicle-specific tolerances.
- Check the specified clearance around the fan. If there are signs of contact, also inspect the engine mounts, fan mounting and support frame for distortion. If there are traces of coolant, test the cold circuit with a pressure tester at the specified test pressure.
Replace damaged mountings and assess adjacent rubber mounts for similar ageing. Fit spacer sleeves, washers and locking devices in the specified sequence. Never use the mounting bolts to pull a misaligned radiator frame into place: correct the alignment first. Use a calibrated torque wrench and follow the specified tightening torque and thread condition for assembly. Lubricants alter bolt preload and must not be applied unless specified.
Then check that coolant hoses are not placing tensile loads on the connections and that the condenser and charge air cooler fit without stress. Replace missing air guides to limit air bypassing the cooling pack. After a cycle up to operating temperature, check again for leaks and signs of contact, but only with the system safely shut down. Correct radiator mounting thus prevents a new heat exchanger from being damaged again by vibration or installation stress.
