Fuse

Fuses in the central distribution board protect power supply wiring against overloads and short circuits. A blown fuse element can disable lighting, cab ventilation or the power supply to control units. A faulty fuse in a MAN or Mercedes truck, bus or van therefore calls for circuit diagnosis: replacing it without identifying the cause often leads to repeated failures or thermal damage to fuse holders.

Always select fuses using the vehicle's chassis number, the relevant wiring diagram and the distribution board layout. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. The production date, equipment codes and additional electrical loads can change the specified protection requirements. For cab-mounted distribution boards, for example, MAN TGX models with XL, XLX or XXL cabs and Mercedes Actros models with Lang StreamSpace or Lang GigaSpace cabs may have different circuit assignments.

Depending on the specification, mini, standard and maxi blade fuses are used; bolt-down strip fuses are also used for higher-current supply circuits. Check the rated current, rated voltage, breaking capacity and time-current characteristic. The voltage rating must be suitable for the relevant 12 V or 24 V system; a higher current rating is never a solution to fuses repeatedly blowing. Electric motor inrush currents require the specified fuse characteristic, not an arbitrarily higher fuse rating.

Blade width, contact thickness, centre-to-centre spacing and fit must also match. Copper or zinc-plated fuse elements, tinned contact surfaces and heat-resistant plastic housings vary between product ranges. Use only the specified version: colour alone does not establish electrical or mechanical compatibility. When assessing suitability, take account of the ambient temperature and the current-carrying capacity of the connected cable's cross-sectional area.

Fuses have no routine replacement interval. Typical causes of failure include chafed power supply cables, moisture in connectors, seized fan motors and retrofitted accessories. Brown discolouration or deformation around an intact fuse element often indicates high contact resistance caused by corroded contacts or insufficient clamping force, rather than necessarily indicating an overload.

1. Identify the affected circuit using the wiring diagram. Note the operating conditions: immediate failure on switching on is more likely to indicate a short circuit, while failure after some time is more likely to indicate an overload or heat build-up.
2. Use a digital multimeter to measure the supply voltage at both test points relative to a reliable earth, with the circuit switched on. If there is no voltage on either side, investigate the upstream supply first.
3. Isolate the circuit from the power supply according to the vehicle procedure. Remove the fuse and check continuity; a blown fuse element will show an open circuit. Never measure resistance on an energised circuit.
4. Measure the operating and inrush currents using a suitable DC clamp meter around a single supply conductor. Compare the readings with the manufacturer's data and the fuse characteristic. Locate faults by systematically disconnecting individual electrical loads and wiring branches.
5. Check the voltage drop across the fuse and contact interfaces under load. Compare it with the product specification; an elevated reading or localised heating requires investigation of the holder.

Repair cable damage, water ingress or faulty electrical loads first. Then replace the fuse with the exact type specified. Never bridge fuse elements or connect a multimeter set to current measurement directly across the fuse holder: this bypasses the protection.

Replace heat-damaged terminal contacts and deformed holders; a new fuse alone will not restore contact pressure. For bolt-down versions, observe the specified tightening torque and avoid mechanical stress on the terminal strips. After installation, carry out a functional load test, recheck the voltage drop and heat build-up, and verify that all affected systems operate reliably.
