Tail lamp

Rear lights are safety-critical lighting units for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans. They generally combine the tail light, brake light, turn signal, reversing light, rear fog light and sometimes number plate or marker lighting in a single lamp unit. A faulty rear light not only results in failure during technical inspection, but can also lead to dangerous situations, fault messages in the vehicle electronics and downtime. The correct lamp unit, bulb holder, LED module or connector must always be identified using the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient, as the version, connector pin assignment, mounting position, voltage level and lighting functions may differ between vehicles.

Rear lights differ between vehicle generations such as MAN F2000, TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX, TG3 and TGE, as well as between Mercedes SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs, Econic, Sprinter and Vito. Buses, including MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach, Mercedes Citaro, Intouro, Tourismo and Neoplan coaches, often have specific body-mounted lighting units. Chassis with bodywork, tractor-trailer configurations and vehicles with tail lifts may also differ in terms of wiring harness and rear light configuration.

There are conventional lamp units with incandescent or halogen bulbs, hybrid versions with separate LED elements and fully LED rear lights. LED units often contain integrated electronics for pulse-width modulated control and lamp monitoring. They are therefore not directly interchangeable with units designed for incandescent bulbs. Pay attention to the number of connector pins, the left or right position, the E approval mark, 12 V or 24 V system voltage, the presence of a rear fog light and the function of any additional connections for outline lighting. An incorrect unit may, for example, cause a permanent lamp fault, a rapidly flashing turn signal or incorrect CAN bus messages.

Common fault symptoms include condensation in the lens, corroded connector pins, burnt bulb sockets, broken mounting lugs, internal breaks in printed circuit tracks and poor earth connections. On vehicles operating intensively on construction sites, in winter road salt conditions or with frequent trailer changes, faults often arise from moisture ingress and broken wires directly behind the connector. Vibrations can also cause loose bulb holders and hairline cracks in the solder joints of LED modules.

First check whether the fault occurs on one side or on both sides. Then read out the fault codes using a suitable diagnostic tester; modern Actros, Arocs, TGX and TG3 models electronically monitor the load of lighting circuits. Next, measure the supply voltage at the connector under load using a multimeter: a voltage measurement without a connected load may mask a poor connection. In a 24 V system, the voltage drop between the positive supply and the lamp connection, as well as between the earth pin and chassis, should remain as low as possible; an increased voltage drop indicates corrosion, contact resistance or cable damage. Also check the earth connection with a voltage drop measurement while the brake light or turn signal is switched on, rather than relying solely on an ohm measurement.

If an incandescent bulb repeatedly fails, check the bulb base, the spring pressure of the contacts and the alternator charging voltage. Excessive system voltage places additional strain on bulbs and electronic modules. For LED rear lights, replacing the complete sealed lamp unit is usually more reliable than repairing internal electronics, particularly when traces of moisture or thermal damage are visible.

Always replace damaged rear lights together with defective seals, bulb holders, connector housings or cable repair kits when these are the cause of the fault. Fitting only a new lamp unit to an oxidised connector will generally lead to recurring failures. Repair cables only using suitable crimp connectors, sealing heat-shrink tubing and strain relief; twisted or poorly insulated connections are unsuitable for the rear section of the chassis.

After installation, check all lighting functions separately: parking light, brake light, turn signals, hazard warning lights, reversing lights, rear fog light and any number plate lighting. Secure the wiring harness so that it does not rub against the chassis, mudguard, tail lift or bodywork.
