Propellor shaft intermediate bearing for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans
Function and compatibility of carrier bearings in propshafts

A carrier bearing, also known as a centre bearing or propshaft support bearing, supports two-piece or multi-piece propshafts between the gearbox and the differential. The bearing centres the propshaft, absorbs radial loads and limits deflection at high rotational speeds. The rubber-metal suspension surrounding the rolling bearing is essential in this respect: it filters vibrations from the driveline without allowing the propshaft to move axially or radially beyond the permitted tolerances.

Carrier bearings are used in a wide range of MAN and Mercedes drivelines for trucks, buses and vans. The design depends, among other things, on the propshaft diameter, the number of propshaft sections, the bolt patterns and spline connections, the mounting height of the support bracket and the permitted drive torque. In vehicles, loads and torsional vibrations depend heavily on the engine, gearbox, wheelbase, axle ratio and operating profile. Even in vans with more compact drivelines, bearing diameters and support constructions vary considerably.

A carrier bearing must therefore only be identified using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison, measuring only the propshaft or selection based on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the shaft diameter at the bearing seat, the bearing width, the position of the mounting holes and the design of the rubber support.

Wear patterns and diagnosis of propshaft support bearings

A worn carrier bearing usually causes a dull knocking sound when pulling away, changing gear or during load changes. At higher driving speeds, droning noises, floor resonances and noticeable vibrations may occur. A torn rubber ring allows the propshaft to drop or move sideways, causing universal joints to operate at an incorrect working angle. This accelerates wear of the needle bearings in the universal joints, the splined sliding joint and even the differential pinion bearing.

Practical inspection procedure

Inspect the vehicle on a lift, with the driveline unloaded and the parking brake secured. First inspect the rubber-metal connection for cracks, separation, oil damage and deformation. Oil or grease on the support often indicates a leaking gearbox output shaft seal or a defective grease seal on the sliding joint. Then move the propshaft up and down and sideways at the centre bearing. Clear radial play, a grinding feel or metallic noises indicate damaged races or balls in the rolling bearing.

Measure the propshaft alignment and flange angles using a digital angle gauge. Incorrect universal joint angles or an incorrectly installed support bracket can cause vibrations that may wrongly be diagnosed as a bearing defect. Also check the propshaft for dents, missing balance weights and binding sliding sections. During a road test, check whether the vibration changes between driving and deceleration loads; this distinction helps separate problems in the carrier bearing, universal joints and differential.

Replacement advice for a durable repair

Replace a carrier bearing as soon as the rolling bearing is audibly worn, the rubber support is torn or the propshaft no longer remains centred. Remove the propshaft in a marked position to preserve the original phasing and balance. On separated propshaft sections, the universal joint yokes must be installed exactly in phase; any rotation can cause cyclic vibrations, even with a new carrier bearing.

Use a suitable press sleeve that acts only on the inner ring or the specified press area. Force applied to the outer ring during installation can preload the races and drastically shorten service life. Replace damaged lock nuts, support bolts and seals according to the specified tightening torques. After installation, check the free movement of the propshaft and carry out a road test across the full speed range. A correctly selected carrier bearing and technical support with identification reduce unplanned downtime in heavy transport.
