Propeller shaft flanges and nuts for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

Propshaft flanges and associated retaining nuts form the critical, bolted connection between the propshaft, gearbox output, intermediate shafts and the differential input flange. They must transmit the full drive torque without play while withstanding misalignment and fluctuating torsional loads. On MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, flanges differ in bolt circle, number of bolt holes, centring lip, locating diameter, flange thickness, splines and permitted bolt or nut grade. Therefore, always identify flanges, locknuts and fastening sets using the chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Compatibility of propshaft flanges and retaining nuts

Depending on the driveline, these may include companion flanges for universal joints, flanges with a centring fit, splined sliding flanges or pinion flanges on the differential. The locating lip provides radial centring, while the bolts or studs mainly provide axial clamping force. A flange with the same bolt circle but a different centring diameter may not be positioned sufficiently concentrically. This causes imbalance, fretting corrosion on the contact surfaces and premature damage to universal joints, propshaft tubes or pinion bearings.

The nuts are also a functional part of the connection. Use only the specified self-locking nuts, flange nuts or nuts with the prescribed locking method, in the correct strength class and thread pitch. Never reuse self-locking nuts, stretched studs or damaged bolts. On pinion flanges, the central nut also often determines the preload of the tapered roller bearings and, indirectly, the backlash between the pinion and crown wheel. An incorrect tightening method can cause serious differential damage.

Wear patterns and targeted diagnosis

Typical fault symptoms include a knocking noise during load changes, vibrations within a specific speed range, a noticeable click when pulling away or slipping propshaft connections. First check that all retaining nuts are present and inspect the flange faces for corrosion, polished movement marks, oval bolt holes and hairline cracks around the bore. Brown rust powder around the fit often indicates micro-movement between two insufficiently clamped components.

Practical measurement procedure before dismantling

Secure the vehicle, relieve the driveline and mark the position of the propshaft and flange to retain the original balancing position. Then use a dial gauge to measure radial runout on the centring lip and axial runout of the flange face. Compare the measured values with the vehicle specifications. Also check the bolt holes for deformation using gauges and assess the threads of the studs with a thread gauge. Measure play in universal joints separately: a defective universal joint can cause similar symptoms, but will not be resolved by replacing flanges or nuts alone.

Replacement advice and installation without recurring faults

Replace a flange if the centring lips are worn, bolt holes are deformed, splines are damaged, cracks are present or measurable runout exceeds tolerance. Clean the mating surfaces completely; paint residues, corrosion and burrs reduce effective clamping force. Install the propshaft in the marked position and tighten the retaining nuts in a criss-cross pattern according to the specified tightening torque and any required angle tightening. Do not use lubricant on threaded connections when the manufacturer specifies dry installation, as this can significantly increase preload.

With a central differential flange nut, the position must never be restored by feel. Follow the repair procedure for bearing rotational torque, axial preload and sealing of the pinion housing. Carefully monitored stock and technical support with identification help minimise downtime and incorrect flange combinations in the workshop.
