Drive shafts for MAN and Mercedes vans
Drive shafts and CV joints for front-wheel-drive vans

This subcategory exclusively includes drive shafts for front-wheel-drive vans. The drive shaft forms the driving connection between the differential in the transaxle and the front wheel hub. Because the front wheels both steer and move through the suspension travel, drive shafts are fitted with CV joints on the front axle. The inner CV joint mainly compensates for changes in length caused by suspension travel, while the outer CV joint must transmit high steering angles under engine torque.

Applications include the Mercedes-Benz Citan, Vito, Viano and certain front-wheel-drive Sprinter versions, as well as front-wheel-drive MAN TGE vans. A drive shaft can never be identified solely based on the model name, year of manufacture or engine output. Differential version, transmission code, track width, ABS sensor ring, hub splines, length and number of splines may differ depending on the version. Therefore, always identify drive shafts, CV joints, boots and fixing bolts using the vehicle chassis number; visual comparison or selection based on the model name alone is never sufficient.

Wear patterns and diagnosis of front axle CV joints

The most common damage is caused by torn CV boots. Water, salt and sand can enter the CV joint grease through a damaged rubber or thermoplastic boot, while grease is thrown out by centrifugal force. This causes accelerated wear to the ball tracks, balls and cage. A rhythmic clicking or cracking noise when pulling away with the steering at full lock usually indicates wear of the outer CV joint. Vibrations during acceleration, especially under load in a higher gear, are more often associated with play or track damage in the inner plunging CV joint.

Practical inspection before replacement

First check for grease traces on the inside of the wheel rim, control arm, suspension strut and gearbox side. Then raise the front axle so that the wheels are free and turn the wheel manually while a second mechanic holds the drive shaft at both joints. Check for radial and axial play, binding or uneven resistance. Also assess the wheel hub bearing and the engine and transmission mounts: a worn wheel bearing or torn drivetrain mount can cause similar vibrations. Carry out a road test, first accelerating in a straight line and then with the wheels at full lock in both directions. Read out fault codes when the ABS, ESP or traction control warning lights are illuminated, as a damaged pulse ring or incorrect ABS ring configuration can produce an incorrect wheel speed signal.

Replacement advice for drive shafts, boots and fixings

Replace a CV boot immediately when the tear is detected early and the CV joint does not yet show noticeable play, discolouration or running noise. Clean the joint thoroughly, inspect the tracks for pitting and use only the specified type of CV joint grease in the correct quantity. If audible cracking noises, worn splines or metal particles in the grease are present, replacing the complete drive shaft is usually more reliable than a partial repair.

During installation, use new lock nuts, circlips and specified axle bolts if required by the manufacturer. Clean the hub splines and differential splines without damaging them; never force the shaft into place by striking the thread. Tighten the wheel hub nut using a calibrated torque wrench and according to the specified angle of rotation. Insufficient tightening torque causes play in the hub connection, while excessive load can damage the wheel bearing or thread. After installation, check the unobstructed suspension travel, correct positioning of the boots and the absence of contact with control arms or heat shields. Technically checked delivery and correct parts identification help minimise unnecessary downtime.
