Wheel bolts

Wheel bolts and wheel nuts form the critical clamping connection between the rim, brake drum or brake disc and the wheel hub. On the front axle of MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, they must not only centre the wheel, but above all generate a constant preload. This clamping force prevents relative movement between the contact surfaces during braking, steering, high axle loads and changing lateral forces. An incorrect bolt length, incorrect tapered or spherical seat, different thread pitch or damaged fit can result in loose wheels, enlarged rim holes, damaged hub threads and serious safety risks. Therefore, always identify wheel bolts and nuts using the vehicle chassis number; visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Front axles may be fitted with pressed-in or screwed-in wheel studs onto which separate nuts are fitted, but also with wheel bolts that screw directly into the wheel hub. The correct design depends on factors including the hub type, rim design, single or twin-wheel mounting, brake configuration and permissible front axle load. Heavy vehicles may use left-hand and right-hand threads, especially where the design requires this to limit loosening caused by rotational loads. Therefore, always check the direction of rotation, thread diameter, pitch, shank length, seat type and spanner size.

The nut must fit the rim exactly: tapered seats centre the rim using a cone angle, while spherical seats use a radius fit. These designs are not interchangeable. Flat flange nuts also have a specific contact pressure distribution and are often used in combination with steel rims or multi-piece wheel connections. Wheel bolts are generally made from high-strength alloy steel, heat-treated for tensile strength and fatigue resistance. Damaged threads, stretched shanks or compromised corrosion protection reduce the effective preload, even when the nut appears to be tightened to the correct torque.

Rattling noises, noticeable vibration in the steering wheel or cab, rust marks around the nut holes, shiny fretting marks on the rim or hub flange and recurring loss of tightening torque indicate a compromised wheel connection. On twin-wheel assemblies, deformed rim discs, insufficient flatness between the rims or incorrectly fitted centring rings may also be the cause. Wheel bolts must never be assessed by visual inspection alone: hairline cracks often develop at the thread transition or beneath the head and are not always immediately visible.

First thoroughly clean the contact surfaces of the hub, brake drum, brake disc and rim; remove corrosion, paint build-up, dirt and metal burrs without damaging the mating surfaces. Then check the thread using a suitable thread gauge or test nut and measure the bolt length from the bearing surface to the thread end. Also compare the free thread length after installation: the nut must engage sufficient full thread turns without bottoming out on the unthreaded shank or the bottom of the hole. Measure enlarged rim holes with a vernier caliper or gauge. Oval holes, cracks around the holes or recessed seats mean that the rim must be replaced; fitting new nuts alone will not solve this problem.

Always replace deformed, corroded, overheated or mechanically damaged wheel bolts and wheel nuts per wheel position or as a complete set when several connections are questionable. Do not use an impact wrench for final tightening. Tighten the nuts in a crosswise pattern in several stages using a calibrated torque wrench, according to the tightening torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer for the specific rim and hub combination. Lubricate the thread or seat only where the fitting instructions explicitly permit this: lubricants alter the coefficient of friction and may cause excessive bolt stretch at the same torque.
