Steering wheel

The steering wheel transfers the driver's steering torque to the steering column and, depending on the version, houses the horn control, multifunction buttons and driver's airbag. Replacing it on MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans therefore requires more than a matching outside diameter. The hub connection, electrical equipment and safety features must also match. Play, loose steering wheel trim or intermittent control failures each call for a targeted diagnosis.

Always identify steering wheels and associated parts using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the original part number, production period and equipment codes. For example, MAN TGX models with XL, XLX and XXL cabs and Mercedes Actros models with Lang StreamSpace, Lang BigSpace and Lang GigaSpace cabs may feature different steering wheel generations and control modules. The cab designation alone does not establish interchangeability. Specification checks are also essential for Lion’s City, Citaro, TGE and Sprinter.

Basic steering wheels with horn controls and multifunction versions are available, with or without an airbag, steering wheel heating or hands-on detection, depending on the vehicle's equipment. Their construction combines a metal supporting structure with a polyurethane covering or leather trim. Key parameters include outside diameter, hub depth, axial installation position, spline profile and fit on the steering column shaft. A different diameter changes the steering effort required and may obstruct the view of the instruments. Also check connector keying, airbag module mounting points and compatibility with the clock spring. There are no universal fit tolerances or tightening torques for these components: follow the vehicle-specific workshop specifications.

A smooth, cracked or twisting covering reduces grip. Clicking noises as steering loads change may indicate a loose hub mounting, damaged splines or play in the steering column bearings. Failure of the horn and steering wheel buttons while turning the wheel is more likely to indicate an open circuit in the clock spring or wiring connection than damage to the steering wheel rim.

1. Park the vehicle safely, secure it against rolling and check the steering wheel rim, spokes and hub for cracks, deformation and relative movement between the trim and supporting structure.
2. Move the steering wheel gently around the centre position while observing the steering column shaft. Measure free play at the steering wheel rim using a graduated scale or as an angle of rotation. Compare it with the manufacturer's limit under the specified test conditions; total steering play does not prove that the steering wheel is defective.
3. Check axial and radial movement with a dial indicator at the specified measuring point. Determine whether the movement originates in the hub connection, steering column bearings or adjustment locking mechanism.
4. If the controls malfunction, read fault codes and live switch status data using suitable diagnostic equipment. Test supply voltage and continuity only on approved, non-pyrotechnic circuits in accordance with the wiring diagram. Never take measurements directly on airbag firing circuits using a multimeter or test lamp.

Only authorised, trained personnel should carry out work on airbags. Isolate the vehicle's electrical supply in accordance with the manufacturer's procedure and observe the specified waiting time. Set the front wheels straight ahead, secure the clock spring in its centre position and prevent it from rotating after removal. Use a suitable puller where specified; hammer blows can damage steering column bearings and safety structures.

Replace steering wheels with cracks, deformation or damaged hub splines; welding or improvised fit adjustments are not safe solutions. Fit new fasteners as specified and use a calibrated torque wrench, with additional angle tightening where required. Afterwards, check the horn, buttons, airbag self-test and unobstructed steering movement. Calibrate the steering angle sensor when required by the manufacturer's procedure. Do not simply reposition the steering wheel to correct an off-centre position: check the centre position and wheel alignment first.
