Lambda sensor

Lambda sensors measure the oxygen content in exhaust gases. Depending on the engine configuration, the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) uses this signal for air-fuel mixture control, air supply monitoring and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) control. On diesel engines, oxygen measurement also supports the monitoring of combustion conditions and exhaust aftertreatment. An abnormal signal can cause emissions faults, increased fuel consumption or disrupted regeneration conditions. However, a lambda sensor is not a nitrogen oxide sensor: the two components perform different measurement functions and are not interchangeable.

Always identify the correct lambda sensor using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the original part number, emissions class, engine variant and installation position. For MAN TGS and TGX with D26 engines or Mercedes Actros with OM 471, first establish which sensor technology the specific configuration actually uses. Applications also vary by powertrain and year of manufacture for buses and vans, such as Mercedes Citaro and Sprinter or MAN TGE.

This check also applies to truck models such as MAN TGL and TGM and Mercedes Atego, Arocs and Econic. Bus and coach examples include MAN Lion's City, Lion's Intercity and Lion's Coach, Mercedes Tourismo and Intouro and Neoplan Tourliner, Cityliner and Skyliner. Additional van examples include Mercedes Vito and Citan. For these vehicle types too, the chassis number must be used to verify whether a lambda sensor is fitted and which version is suitable.

Heated zirconia switching sensors primarily distinguish between rich and lean mixtures around lambda 1. Wideband lambda sensors use a measuring cell and an oxygen pump cell to cover a wider measurement range; this is relevant for diesel engines operating with excess air. The ceramic sensing element, integrated heater and heat-resistant metal protective sleeve together form a calibrated measuring system.

Compare thread size, pitch, sealing seat, insertion depth, cable length and connector keying. M18 × 1.5 is common, but is not a universal fit. Heater power, control characteristics, permissible exhaust gas temperature and pressure dependence must also match the application. The vehicle's electrical system voltage alone does not determine whether a sensor is electrically compatible.

Thermal ageing slows the response. Engine oil or coolant consumption and silicone-containing products can contaminate the ceramic element. Other common issues include open heater circuits, corroded connectors and cable damage near hot exhaust components. Exhaust leaks upstream of the measurement point can draw in outside air and produce a falsely high oxygen reading.

1. Read the fault codes and stored operating conditions. Check whether the fault relates to the measurement signal, heater or plausibility; a fault code does not prove that the sensor is defective.
2. Inspect cable routing, connector pins and exhaust joints. Check for leaks using a smoke test on a cooled system, at the test pressure permitted by the manufacturer.
3. Measure the supply voltage and earth-side voltage drop under load in accordance with the wiring diagram. Only measure heater resistance with the power off, the sensor disconnected and at the specified temperature. Compare the results with the vehicle-specific limits.
4. With the engine warm, record the oxygen reading or lambda value, heater status, air mass and EGR control during the specified changes in engine speed and load. Assess response time and deviations against the manufacturer's reference values.
5. For electrical signal checks, use the specified test adapter and oscilloscope procedure. Do not assess wideband sensors using the voltage criteria for a switching sensor, and never apply battery voltage directly to measuring or pump cells.

First resolve any exhaust leaks, fluid consumption or wiring issues. Allow the exhaust system to cool and use a suitable lambda sensor socket. Check the threaded boss and sealing seat; damage can cause leaks or incorrect positioning. Do not clean the sensing element with solvents or a wire brush.

Tighten to the specified torque. Do not add extra assembly paste to pre-treated threads; otherwise, use only an approved product and keep the sensor tip clean. Route the cable without tension, away from hot areas and moving parts. Carry out any required initialisation in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, then recheck the readings and fault status after a road test.
