NOX sensor

NOx (nitrogen oxides) sensors measure the concentration of nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases and support dosing control and efficiency monitoring in SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems. In MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, abnormal readings can lead to emissions faults, torque limitation or restart restrictions, depending on the vehicle specification. However, a fault message does not prove that the sensor probe is defective: wiring issues, exhaust leaks and insufficient AdBlue dosing can cause the same symptoms.

Always identify the correct NOx sensors using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the original part number, any superseding part numbers, the emissions class and the installation position. On MAN TGS and TGX vehicles with D20 or D26 engines and Mercedes Actros vehicles with OM 471 engines, sensors vary according to the year of manufacture and aftertreatment configuration. Variant-specific checks are also required for Lion’s City, Citaro, TGE and Sprinter.

Common designs consist of a heated zirconia ceramic sensing element, a metal protective tube and an associated electronic control module. The concentration is usually expressed in ppm (parts per million). Sensors upstream and downstream of the SCR catalytic converter operate at different measuring positions and may differ in calibration, cable configuration and communication identifiers; they are not interchangeable without verification.

Relevant selection parameters include supply voltage, for example 12 or 24 volts depending on the application, connector coding, cable length, thread, insertion depth and temperature range. The measuring range, accuracy tolerances and response time must match the vehicle specification. The control module generally communicates via CAN (Controller Area Network). A connector that fits therefore does not guarantee electrical or software compatibility.

Thermal ageing, condensate damage to the hot ceramic, contamination caused by engine oil consumption and connector corrosion can cause measurement drift or failure. Cables can be damaged by exhaust heat, vibration or chafing against mounting brackets. Common symptoms include missing readings, slow signal response, heater faults and recurring messages indicating insufficient catalytic converter efficiency.

1. Record the fault. Read out fault codes, freeze-frame data and live data using suitable diagnostic software. Distinguish power supply, communication and heater faults from plausibility or efficiency faults.
2. Check the electrical circuit. Use a multimeter to measure the supply voltage and voltage drop across the supply and earth circuits under load. Check connector pins and cable insulation. If there are communication problems, assess the CAN signals with an oscilloscope using the vehicle's wiring diagram; do not take arbitrary resistance measurements on the ceramic sensing element.
3. Assess the measurement conditions. Check heater status, dew point release status and exhaust gas temperatures. A sensor that has not yet been enabled must not be judged defective solely because concentration readings are missing.
4. Compare signals under load. Record the readings upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter during the prescribed road test. Allow for exhaust gas transit time and sensor response. If conversion efficiency is insufficient, also check for exhaust leaks, AdBlue quality, dosing quantity and catalytic converter temperature. Ammonia can cause cross-sensitivity and explain an elevated reading.

Allow the exhaust system to cool to a safe temperature and follow the removal procedure. Use suitable sensor tools, avoid twisting the cable and check the thread and sealing surface of the sensor mounting boss. Tighten to the specified torque. Use only approved assembly paste; additional paste is generally not recommended on a pre-coated thread. Do not clean the sensor tip with solvents or compressed air.

Replace the probe and control module as a matched unit when specified by the manufacturer. Restore the cable routing and heat shields, and carry out any prescribed initialisation or adaptation procedures. Clear fault codes only after repairs have been completed, and confirm during a verification cycle that communication, measurement response and emissions monitoring are functioning correctly. Address engine oil consumption or dosing problems at the same time; otherwise, even a new sensor can quickly fail again.
