Tools & equipment for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans
Choose tools to suit the repair and vehicle configuration

When working on MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, the task determines which tools are safe and accurate enough to use. Wheel fitting, engine repairs and work on the compressed air system require different torque ranges, connections and measuring ranges. These tasks may call for torque wrenches, impact sockets, pullers, locking tools, pressure test kits and electronic measuring equipment. Chrome-vanadium hand sockets are not necessarily suitable for use with impact wrenches; use impact-rated sockets with the correct square drive, size and load rating.

Vehicle series and engine variant matter when selecting special tools. Timing and locking tools for a MAN D08 or D26 are not necessarily interchangeable with those for a Mercedes OM 936 or OM 471. Access, fasteners and system configurations also differ between vehicles such as the TGL, TGX, Sprinter, Atego and Actros.

From fault symptoms to reliable measurements

An incorrect diagnosis often costs more time than the dismantling itself. When investigating a fault, start by recording fault codes and live readings with a suitable diagnostic tool. Then verify the complaint with an independent measurement. For electrical faults, measure the supply voltage first, followed by the voltage drop across earth and supply connections under load; a continuity test without a load may fail to reveal excessive contact resistance. Use an oscilloscope rather than relying solely on a multimeter for rapidly changing signals.

If air-operated components respond slowly or pressure drops, check the pressure build-up first, then compare the pressure at the relevant test points. A pressure gauge with a range of 0–16 bar, for example, may be suitable for compressed air diagnostics, provided its working pressure rating, connection and accuracy class match the system. Then check couplings and lines for leaks. Never connect an ordinary compressed air pressure gauge to a hydraulic system or a high-pressure fuel circuit: these require specifically rated test kits and safe connection procedures.

Wear, replacement and safe working

Rounded sockets, worn puller jaws, damaged test leads and overdue calibration can cause inaccurate measurements or damage to components. Before use, check that the tool fits the fastener, inspect the condition of threads and jaws, check the insulation of electrical test equipment and verify the calibration certificate for torque wrenches. Choose a torque wrench whose specified tightening torque falls within its usable measuring range; always consult the vehicle-specific repair information for tightening torques and sequences.

When removing seized parts, a suitable puller or press applies force in a straight line and provides better control than striking or prying. Support the assembly, depressurise compressed air or hydraulic circuits according to the workshop procedure, and protect sealing surfaces from damage. Replace tools that no longer fit accurately or whose load capacity is unknown. This helps prevent damaged threads, distorted components and repeat repairs.
