Clutch release yoke

The clutch release fork with release shaft transmits the force from the hydraulic clutch release pump to the release bearing. In MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, these components convert the linear movement of the hydraulic clutch cylinder into a precisely defined pivoting movement, allowing the release bearing to operate the diaphragm spring of the clutch pressure plate. The clutch release fork is mounted in the gearbox clutch housing and rotates or pivots around the release shaft. Depending on the version, this shaft is mounted in plain bushes, bearing bushes or seats in the clutch housing. On one side, the clutch release fork is actuated by the release pump. As a result, it rotates around the release shaft mounted in the clutch housing. Through the lever effect, the other side of the clutch release fork operates the release bearing.

Clutch release forks and release shafts vary considerably according to gearbox type, clutch diameter, release bearing design and actuation system. For example, a fork for a vehicle with a MAN D08 or D20 engine cannot simply be interchanged with a fork for a vehicle equipped with a D26, D38 or older D28 engine. Mercedes vehicles also have significant differences between those fitted with OM 366, OM 457, OM 460, OM 471 or OM 473 engines, depending on the installed manual or automated transmission and clutch housing.

Therefore, always identify parts based on the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison, the model name alone or only the engine type are never sufficient. When identifying the part, pay attention to the diameter and length of the release shaft, the position of the splines or lever teeth, the fork bore size, the shape of the release bearing contact points and the type of clutch housing. The fit between shaft and bush must be sufficiently tight to prevent misalignment, while remaining loose enough to allow free movement during temperature changes and contamination.

Typical damage patterns include worn shaft bushes, scored shafts, cracked fork arms, worn release bearing contact surfaces and a twisted or bent clutch release fork. Vehicles used extensively for manoeuvring, distribution work or frequent stop-start cycles place particularly high loads on the mechanism. Corrosion in the clutch housing, unsuitable or insufficient lubrication at the specified pivot points, or hydraulic fluid leakage can further impede movement.

Symptoms include a heavy or irregular clutch pedal, insufficient clutch disengagement, difficulty selecting gears with the engine running, a grinding noise during operation, or a release bearing that does not engage centrally with the diaphragm spring. Wear on the fork or shaft can also result in insufficient effective travel: the hydraulic clutch release pump may appear to function correctly, but the clutch does not fully disengage.

For a targeted diagnosis, remove the gearbox and first inspect the release bearing, guide sleeve and diaphragm spring fingers of the pressure plate. Then measure the radial play of the release shaft in the bearing bushes using a dial gauge; noticeable tilting or uneven contact at both fork arms indicates wear. Check the shaft for grooves and measure its diameter at several points using a micrometer. Compare these values with the factory tolerances. Also check whether the release pump completes its full stroke and whether there is no air or leakage in the hydraulic circuit.

Never replace a clutch release fork on its own when the release shaft, bushes or release bearing guide show clear wear. A new fork on a worn shaft will continue to move out of alignment and may prematurely damage the new release bearing or diaphragm spring. In the event of visible wear, it is therefore advisable to replace the fork, shaft, bushes and retaining components as a set. At the same time, inspect the release bearing, clutch pressure plate, clutch disc and hydraulic clutch release pump.

Thoroughly clean the clutch housing before installing the new parts. Apply only the specified lubricant in limited quantities to the pivot points and contact surfaces; excess grease may reach the friction lining of the clutch disc. Correct installation and identification of parts based on the chassis number reduce downtime and protect the gearbox against damage caused by incomplete clutch disengagement.
