Dashboard for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

The dashboard forms the mechanical and electrical interface around the instrument cluster, switches, control units and air vents. Cracks, loose mountings or poorly fitting dashboard parts do more than cause rattles: they can damage wiring harnesses, strain connectors and allow controls to shift. When diagnosing faults, therefore, distinguish between defects in the dashboard structure, connected control modules and the separate instrument panel.

Dashboard variants, materials and vehicle compatibility

Depending on the vehicle specification, this category includes dashboard support frames, upper panels, instrument bezels, switch panels and covers. Load-bearing structures differ from decorative trim parts in rigidity, mounting method and load capacity. Plastic panels may be made of polypropylene or blends of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene; check the material marking before choosing a repair method. Ageing caused by sunlight and heat reduces impact resistance and makes snap-fit connections more prone to breakage.

Always identify dashboard parts using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the part number, year of manufacture, left- or right-hand drive configuration, cut-outs, colour code and equipment level. MAN TGX models with XL-, XLX- and XXL-cabs may require different dashboard parts from TG3-series TGX models with GN-, GM- and GX-cabs. Mercedes Actros Lang StreamSpace and Lang GigaSpace must also be checked for their specific configuration. Buses and vans, such as Citaro and Sprinter, have their own driver's area configurations.

For electrical modules fitted in the dashboard, check connector keying, pin assignments and rated supply voltage: typically 24 volts for trucks and buses and 12 volts for vans. Switches that look identical may have different internal circuitry or use CAN (Controller Area Network) communication. A mechanical fit therefore does not mean electrical interchangeability.

Signs of wear and targeted diagnosis

Typical complaints include creaking as the cab moves, torn-out screw bosses, broken retaining tabs and panels that no longer sit flush after previous removal. Intermittent switch failures are often caused by strain on the wiring or connectors that are not fully locked in place. An air leak near the windscreen may also indicate a loose connection between the dashboard and the demister duct.

  1. Locate the source of the problem. With the vehicle stationary, check whether gentle hand pressure on individual panels changes the noise. Inspect mounting points, support brackets and contact surfaces for play, chafing marks and missing insulating strips.
  2. Check the fit. Compare panel joints and installation depth with the fitting specifications. Measure irregular gaps with a feeler gauge or vernier calliper. There is no universal dashboard tolerance; never use the fixing screws to force a panel into position.
  3. Investigate electrical faults. Read out diagnostic data from the relevant control modules. Use a multimeter to measure the supply voltage and voltage drop to earth under operating load. Gently move the wiring harness while recording readings to locate intermittent connections; use suitable test adapters to avoid spreading the connector contacts.
  4. Check the airflow. Test the fan speeds and demisting function. Inspect connecting ducts and foam seals if air escapes behind the dashboard instead of through the intended vents.
Replacement without consequential damage

Isolate the vehicle's electrical system before removal, following the manufacturer's procedure. Where airbags are fitted, additional safety precautions and waiting times apply; never use a multimeter to test airbag igniter circuits. Label connectors, document cable routing and support heavy dashboard parts during removal.

Replace broken clips and damaged seals. Use the specified fasteners and tightening torques: overtightening cracks plastic screw bosses. Repair load-bearing mountings and any airbag covers only in accordance with approved procedures. Avoid trapping cables and allow room for thermal expansion. After installation, check the switches, lighting, dimming controls, warning functions and demisting; then carry out a controlled road test to check for rattles.
