Reflectors for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

Reflectors are passive safety components that improve the visibility of MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans when illuminated by the headlights of other road users. Unlike rear lights, indicators and clearance lights, reflectors do not require an electrical supply, wiring harness or lamp unit. Their reflective prismatic structure directs incoming light largely back towards the light source. This keeps vehicle contours, bodies, trailers and protruding body parts visible when stationary, broken down or manoeuvring in dark conditions.

The design varies according to model year, vehicle length, homologation, body configuration, mounting position and original bracket. This applies to MAN TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX, TG3 and TGE, as well as Mercedes Sprinter, Vito, Atego, Actros, Arocs, Econic, Citaro and Tourismo. Reflectors on MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach and Neoplan coaches may also differ depending on the body variant and panel layout.

Types of reflectors and compatibility by mounting position

The range includes round, rectangular and triangular reflectors, as well as reflective contour markings and combined units with a reflector integrated into a lamp housing. Red rear reflectors are generally mounted at the rear; amber side reflectors mark the vehicle length. White versions may be fitted at the front or on specific body components. Triangular reflectors are typical for trailers and semi-trailers; do not use them as a replacement for a non-triangular reflector on a motor vehicle.

In addition to colour and shape, pay attention to the ECE homologation marking, reflective surface, mounting method and installation dimensions. Versions are available with self-adhesive backing, screw mounting, snap-in pins, rubber bases or fitting to a reflector bracket. When mounting in bumpers, mudguards, cab corners, side skirts or rear doors, the hole diameter, centre-to-centre distance, panel radius and available installation depth determine whether the reflector fits without stress. An overly tight fit can cause plastic mounting lugs to crack; mounting that is too loose can lead to loss due to vibration.

Wear patterns, inspection and fault analysis in the workshop

The most common issue is loss of reflectivity. UV radiation, stone chips, washing chemicals, diesel mist and aggressive cleaning agents affect the transparent plastic lens and the metallised prismatic layer. The reflector may still appear intact in broad daylight, but may not reflect sufficient light at night. Weathered adhesive layers, broken tabs, detached brackets and moisture ingress are also common on vehicles frequently used on construction sites, in distribution transport or in winter road salt conditions.

Practical diagnosis before replacement

First clean the surface with a plastic-safe cleaner and check for cracks, dull areas, discolouration and missing prisms. Then compare the left and right sides at the same angle using a focused torch or inspection lamp: a good reflector produces a bright, uniform reflected light pattern without dark spots. Next, inspect the mounting plate and bodywork for deformation, corrosion around screw holes and damaged clips. For reflectors located next to lighting units, also check whether a missing reflector indicates previous damage to the bumper, lamp carrier or rear panel.

Replacement advice for durable and compliant mounting

Replace reflectors when the lens is cracked, dull, discoloured or insufficiently retroreflective, even if the reflector is still securely fitted. Do not repair a detached self-adhesive version using universal glue on a contaminated surface: remove old adhesive residue, degrease the panel and use a reflector with a suitable automotive adhesive layer. On screw-mounted versions, fasteners must not be overtightened; this causes stress cracks in the lens or bracket. Replace damaged clips, sealing rubbers and reflector brackets at the same time to prevent repeated loss.
