NMV seals for MAN and Mercedes trucks

Seals in an NMV (engine-driven power take-off) keep lubricant in and dirt and moisture out. If a seal is leaking, addressing only the visible oil trace is not enough: transmission oil can travel along housings and flanges before it drips off. A targeted diagnosis prevents a new seal from being fitted when the real cause is a blocked breather, a worn shaft fit or a damaged cover.

NMV stands for the German Motorabhängiger Nebenabtrieb: an engine-driven power take-off (PTO). In Mercedes-Benz and ZF applications, this PTO is driven directly by the engine, independently of the gearbox clutch. A multi-plate clutch allows the PTO drive to be engaged and disengaged under load. This makes the NMV suitable for demanding applications, such as concrete pumps and hydraulic systems on trucks.

Identifying the right NMV seal

NMV versions differ in their drive, housing, flange and lubrication circuit. On MAN TGS and TGX or Mercedes Actros and Arocs trucks, the configuration can also vary by engine and transmission variant. This applies to MAN D20 and D26 engines or Mercedes OM 470 and OM 471 engines, for example, but does not mean that every version has an NMV. Always identify parts using both the chassis number and the NMV identification. A visual comparison or selection by model name alone is never sufficient.

Depending on the design, the part may be a radial shaft seal, O-ring, flat gasket or seal for a cover or connecting flange. Check the inside diameter, outside diameter, width, groove dimensions, lip orientation and whether a dust lip is required. The material must also be compatible with the specified lubricant and operating temperature: NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber), FKM (fluoroelastomer) and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) are not automatically interchangeable. Do not assume that the NMV shares a lubrication circuit with the gearbox; verify how the fitted version is lubricated.

Diagnosing leaks before replacement

A wet output flange, falling lubricant level or oil mist around a cover may indicate a seal problem. Heat, contamination and hardening can cause sealing lips to wear. Vibration, a worn seal running surface or increased housing pressure can cause or accelerate the same leak. Even a small loss matters when hydraulic equipment is used for long periods: insufficient lubrication puts the PTO gears and rolling bearings at risk.

Practical inspection sequence

First, clean the NMV and adjacent transmission components. Locate the first wet spot after a controlled test run; if necessary, use a UV tracer suitable for the lubricant. Then check the level and condition of the specified lubricant and inspect the breather for blockages. Measure the radial play and runout of the relevant shaft with a dial indicator and compare the readings with the specifications for that NMV. Inspect the seal running surface for grooves and corrosion. If a housing joint is wet, also check flatness, fasteners and cracks before replacing the gasket.

Fitting seals without recurring leaks

Remove old seals without damaging the bore or sealing surface. Clean the mating surfaces, check the fit and install a radial shaft seal squarely at the specified depth; protect the lip as it passes over keyways. Use sealant only where specified by the manufacturer, and tighten fasteners in the correct sequence to the specified torques. Fill the relevant circuit with the specified transmission oil or lubricant, then check the level and for leaks again after a test run. If the shaft fit is out of tolerance, a new seal alone will not prevent the leak from returning: repair the running surface or the affected bearings first.
