Clutch plates for MAN and Mercedes trucks

Clutch plates are crucial friction elements within an NMV (Nebenabtrieb motorabhängig vorgebaut), a front-mounted, engine-dependent power take-off. This front-mounted PTO is driven directly by the engine, meaning that the PTO speed depends on engine speed. In MAN and Mercedes applications, these clutch plates ensure controlled transfer of engine torque to the PTO, including in vehicles equipped with a concrete pump. For workshops and technical departments, correct assessment of clutch plates is important, as issues such as slipping under load, irregular power delivery or delayed PTO engagement are not always caused by the complete NMV unit. In many cases, the cause lies in worn friction plates, burnt surfaces or a combination of clutch plate wear and contaminated oil.

Compatibility, design and engine matching

Not every clutch plate is interchangeable between NMV systems in MAN and Mercedes trucks. Dimensions, friction material, thickness, splines and the number of plates vary depending on the NMV type, internal clutch design and vehicle application. Especially for vehicles with high power demand on the PTO, such as vehicles with concrete pumps, the clutch plate set must be matched exactly to the NMV version, drive system and vehicle concerned. An incorrect thickness or unsuitable friction material quickly leads to abnormal pressure build-up, heat generation and accelerated wear.

It is therefore important that parts are identified based on the vehicle chassis number. This prevents incorrect installation on variants within the same vehicle range. For workshops that need to act quickly, technical support with identification is often more useful than simply comparing old and new parts visually.

Typical wear, faults and diagnosis

Worn clutch plates in an NMV can usually be identified by a combination of symptoms. These include slipping with the PTO engaged, irregular power transfer, slow drive engagement, increased oil temperature and a burnt smell in the oil. During dismantling, blue discolouration, glazed friction surfaces, crumbling friction material or uneven plate thickness are clear indicators. Metal particles or friction residue in the oil also often indicate internal wear extending beyond the clutch plates themselves.

An important consideration is that clutch plate damage is often secondary. Causes include insufficient oil pressure, contaminated oil, overheating, dragging actuation or prolonged loading of the engine-dependent PTO. The NMV operates as follows: first, the NMV is engaged; next, the clutch plates are pressed together; then power is transmitted through friction; and finally, the PTO starts rotating. Replacing only the clutch plates without checking the hydraulic control, oil quality and surrounding components carries a high risk of repeat damage.

Practical replacement advice from the workshop

Preferably replace clutch plates as a complete set and always inspect the steel plates, drum, seals and any pistons for wear marks or deformation. Measure clearance and clutch pack thickness according to the NMV specification, and flush the system when the oil is visibly burnt or contaminated. After installation, check whether the NMV engages correctly, whether the clutch plates transmit torque without slipping and whether the PTO runs steadily under load. This prevents a mechanically correct repair from returning with functional complaints. At Braem, the rapid availability of technically correctly identified parts is a practical advantage for professional workshops.

Common issues and durable solutions

A common issue in vehicles with concrete pumps is the high thermal and mechanical load on the NMV caused by prolonged operation under load. In such cases, it is not enough to look only at wear; the operating profile and maintenance history are also decisive. Timely oil changes using the correct specification, checking pressure build-up and a complete inspection of the relevant NMV components significantly extend the service life of new clutch plates.

For companies looking to minimise downtime, the rapid availability of correctly identified parts is important, but an accurate diagnosis is even more important. This is why many professionals opt for targeted replacement based on technical inspection, with attention to quality and precise fitment. This is generally the safest route to a durable repair of MAN and Mercedes NMV systems. As with other transmission components, the correct clutch plates must always be identified using the vehicle chassis number.
