Repair kit steering knuckel

A kingpin kit restores the pivot point between the front axle beam and the steering knuckle of MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans. Depending on the axle version, the kit generally includes a kingpin, kingpin bushes, axial thrust bearings or thrust washers, sealing rings, shims, locking pins and grease nipples. This system must withstand high vertical wheel loads, braking forces and varying steering forces simultaneously without altering the wheel geometry. Even limited wear on the kingpins or plain bearings causes noticeable play, uneven tyre wear and unstable steering behaviour. Always select a kingpin kit based on the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison, identifying the axle version from photos or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Kingpin kits differ according to front axle type, permitted axle load, steering knuckle design, kingpin diameter and length, position of the lubrication channels and locking pin attachment. On heavy-duty front axles, the pins and bushes are generally larger to withstand higher bending moments. A kit for a steered leading axle, driven front axle or bus front axle is therefore not automatically interchangeable with a version for a standard rigid front axle.

The kingpin does not rotate directly in the front axle beam, but operates in precisely fitting plain bearings or kingpin bushes in the steering knuckle. The axial load is absorbed by a thrust bearing or hardened thrust washer at the bottom or top, depending on the design. The correct fit between pin and bush is crucial: too little clearance causes seizure, insufficient lubrication and galling; excessive radial play leads to steering vibrations and incorrect wheel alignment. Seals must keep water, road dirt and abrasive particles out of the bearing area, while grease nipples allow the supply of suitable bearing grease.

Typical complaints include a knocking sound over bumps, unstable steering, tramlining, increased steering effort and irregular wear on the inner or outer edge of the front tyres. In cases of severe wear, the steering knuckle may visibly tilt in relation to the front axle beam. This affects camber and toe while driving and can also accelerate wear on track rod ends, steering ball joints and wheel bearings.

Safely place the vehicle on supports so that the wheel being inspected hangs freely, with the load removed from the steering knuckle. First check that the wheel nuts, brake components and wheel bearings are not causing play. Then measure radial movement at the wheel rim or brake disc using a dial gauge while a second mechanic moves the wheel at the top and bottom. Visually locate the movement between the kingpin, bush and steering knuckle. Axial wear is checked by slightly lifting the wheel with a lever and recording the vertical movement using a dial gauge. Compare the measured values with the axle manufacturer's specifications; general limit values are not a reliable alternative.

Replace a kingpin kit when the kingpin is worn, corroded or blue discoloured, when the bushes are worn oval or when the thrust bearing is damaged. Installing new bushes only on a damaged pin is not a durable repair. Remove the steering knuckle using suitable pressing and pulling equipment to avoid damage to the front axle beam. Thoroughly clean the kingpin bores and check them for ovality, cracks and fretting. Press the bushes in squarely, correctly align any lubrication channels and calibrate or ream the internal diameter only according to the specified tolerances.

Fit the new sealing rings, locking components and shims from the kit, then fill with the specified bearing grease until clean grease appears at the sealing area. After installation, check free steering movement, axial end play and correct lubrication operation. In the event of abnormal tyre wear or a steering overhaul, have the wheel alignment checked as well. Technically inspected stock and support with identification based on the chassis number help determine the correct kingpin kit quickly for the specific axle version.
