Steering knuckle

The steering knuckle forms the load-bearing and steering end section of the front axle on MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans. It is pivotally connected to the front axle beam by means of kingpins; the wheel hub, wheel bearings, brake disc or brake drum and steering arm are mounted on it. The design must withstand high radial forces caused by vehicle weight and load, axial forces when cornering and varying braking forces without altering the wheel geometry. Even a minor deviation in kingpin fitment, bearing seat or steering arm taper can result in tyre wear, steering instability and insufficient braking stability.

Steering knuckles differ according to axle load, brake configuration, hub size, kingpin diameter, centre distance between the pin bores, steering arm mounting and design for driven or non-driven front axles. On driven front axles, specific steering knuckle housings are provided for the passage of drive shafts and universal joints. The position of ABS sensor rings, brake anchor plates and wheel studs may also vary depending on the axle variant. Selection based solely on the vehicle model, cab variant or a visual comparison is therefore never reliable.

The correct part must always be determined using the vehicle chassis number, supplemented by the axle number. This prevents errors with, among others, MAN TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX, and Mercedes Atego, Arocs, Actros and Axor vehicles with different front axle configurations for distribution, long-haul transport, construction applications and bus operation. When selecting a replacement part, also check explicitly whether the left and right sides are identical; steering knuckles are often side-specific due to the positioning of steering arms and stop lugs.

The most common defects are worn kingpin bores, scored plain bearings or bronze bushings, corrosion in the bearing seats, cracked steering arm mountings and damaged tapered seats. Worn sealing rings or missing grease seals allow water, dust and road salt to penetrate to the kingpins and plain bearings. This causes the grease film to disappear, fretting corrosion to develop and radial play to increase rapidly. On vehicles with central lubrication, a blocked grease line or defective distribution block must also be ruled out.

Safely raise the front axle clear of the ground and unload the wheel. Then use a dial indicator to measure radial and axial movement at the rim or hub while a second technician loads the wheel at the top and bottom. Compare the measured value with the vehicle-specific factory tolerances. Distinguish between play in the kingpin connection and wheel bearing play: secure the brake disc or hub and check the movement directly at the steering knuckle. Then inspect the seals, grease nipples, kingpins, thrust bearings and locking plates. Pulling to one side, sawtooth wear or unstable handling also require inspection of toe, camber, caster and steering rods.

Replace a steering knuckle when the pin bores are oval, the bearing seats are outside tolerance, cracks are visible or the steering arm and hub mountings are damaged. Fitting new bushings only in a worn steering knuckle housing is not a durable repair: the required interference fit and alignment of the kingpin bores can no longer be guaranteed. Depending on the axle type, overhaul may consist of new kingpins, plain bearings, axial thrust bearings, seal kits and locking components, provided that the steering knuckle housing remains dimensionally stable.

During installation, thoroughly clean all contact surfaces, check the mating surfaces for burrs and press the bushings in squarely using suitable tools. Then ream or hone the bushings to size in order to achieve the specified clearance class with the kingpin. Fit new seals, fill with the specified chassis grease and carry out wheel alignment after installation. Timely technical assessment and good availability of axle components help minimise downtime and damage to tyres, wheel bearings and the steering system.
