Bed for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

A cab bed is a safety and comfort component for drivers resting during multi-day journeys, waiting times or international transport assignments. It is used intensively especially in MAN TGA, TGX and TG3 cabs with XLX, XXL, GM or GX cab, and in Mercedes Actros and Arocs versions with StreamSpace, BigSpace or GigaSpace. Sleeping facilities in certain MAN Lion’s Coach, Neoplan Cityliner and Tourliner coaches also require correct replacement bed components. The correct version is always determined using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on model name, cab designation or bed width is never sufficient.

Construction, compatibility and types of cab beds

Cab beds generally consist of a steel or aluminium support frame, a slatted base or panel base, a foam mattress and mounting points in the rear wall or side structure of the cab. Depending on the cab configuration, this may be a fixed lower bunk, a fold-up upper bunk, a fold-down bed or a bed assembly with integrated storage space. Some versions require gas struts, hinge arms, locking catches, pull straps and plastic guides to open the upper bunk in a controlled manner and lock it in the rest position.

Fitment is determined not only by the length and width of the sleeping area, but also by the position of mounting points, hinge centre-to-centre distance, headroom below the roof, seat belt guides and the version of the side panels. For example, a bed frame from a MAN TGX XXL is not automatically interchangeable with a TG3 GX cab; the same applies to a Mercedes Actros BigSpace compared with a GigaSpace. Therefore, always check the chassis number, part numbers, cab variant and any code for the upper or lower bunk.

Typical wear, faults and diagnosis

A sagging mattress, broken slats, deformed frame or worn hinge point results in insufficient support and disturbed sleep. In practice, drivers often report creaking during movement, a bed hanging at an angle, an upper bunk that no longer locks, or a mattress that sags locally. Moisture-related issues also require attention: condensation, leaking roof hatches or defective cab seals can damage foam layers, cause mould formation and accelerate corrosion of steel support frames.

Inspection procedure before replacement

First visually inspect all mounting bolts, weld seams, guides and locking mechanisms for wear, cracking or corrosion. Then measure the diagonals of the bed frame to identify deformation after a cab impact; a deviation indicates stress in the frame or incorrect installation. On fold-up beds, check the operation of the gas struts by moving the bed slowly through its full travel: jerky movement, insufficient holding force or uneven extension force requires replacement as a set. Also assess the locking in the closed position by manually pulling on the frame. The bed must not have any play that could cause noise, damage or unintended opening during braking or cornering.

Replacement advice and durable installation

Replace a mattress when the foam core is permanently deformed, the cover is torn, or moisture and odours cannot be professionally removed. Replace complete bed frames if profiles are bent, weld joints are cracked or mounting eyes are worn; straightening may compromise the dimensions and load-bearing capacity of the frame. Always install hinges, bushes, gas struts and locking catches in the specified position and at the correct tightening torque. Use new self-locking nuts where originally fitted and check that wiring harnesses, curtains and interior panels are not trapped.

For an efficient repair, it is advisable to assess the bed frame, locking components and mattress as an interacting system. Correct fitment reduces subsequent work on cab panels and prevents rattling while driving. Thanks to the available cab parts, downtime caused by a damaged or unsafe bed can be kept to a minimum.
