A four-circuit protection valve, also known as a four-way valve, distributes compressed air from the air dryer across separate air pressure circuits and isolates these circuits from one another in the event of pressure loss. In the pneumatic braking systems of MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans, this function is essential for the service brake, parking brake, any trailer brakes and auxiliary consumers. The valve opens the outlets according to specified cut-in pressures and prevents a leak in one circuit from draining the entire compressed air supply. Always select a four-circuit protection valve based on the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison, the number of connections or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.
Four-circuit protection valves are used in, among others, MAN F2000, TGA, TGL, TGM, TGS, TGX and TG3, as well as Mercedes SK, Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs, Econic and Antos. The brake circuit configuration and compressed air connections may also differ in buses such as the MAN Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach, Mercedes Citaro, Tourismo and Neoplan Cityliner. MAN TGE and Mercedes Sprinter vehicles more commonly use hydraulic braking systems; a pneumatic four-circuit protection valve is therefore not normally relevant for these vehicles.
Key differentiating parameters include the nominal system pressure, usually in the range of approximately 8 to 12.5 bar, the opening and closing pressure for each circuit, the thread size and design of the connection ports, the position of the charging and protection outlets, and any integrated non-return valves. Some versions combine a four-circuit protection function with connections for regeneration air or a connection to the air dryer. The housing is generally made of corrosion-resistant aluminium or brass; internal seals must be resistant to compressed air, condensate, compressor oil and temperature fluctuations. A visually similar valve with a different pressure calibration can result in an incorrect filling sequence of the air tanks.
Internal leakage, contaminated valve seats, hardened O-rings and corrosion caused by insufficiently drained air tanks are the main causes of failure. Typical symptoms include slow pressure build-up, a circuit that does not pressurise, uneven tank pressures, continuous venting through the exhaust port or a pressure drop after the engine has been switched off. Vehicles with EBS (Electronic Braking System) may also display warnings for insufficient circuit pressure or restricted braking function.
First check whether the air compressor delivers sufficient output and whether the air dryer regenerates correctly. Then measure the pressure upstream of the valve and in each outgoing circuit using calibrated pressure gauges. Bring the system up to operating pressure and record the filling sequence and cut-in pressures. Compare these values with the vehicle-specific workshop specification. Then isolate each circuit: if the inlet pressure remains stable but one outlet loses pressure, an external leak or consumer in that circuit is more likely than the four-circuit protection valve itself. Check pipe connections, air tanks, brake cylinders and trailer control valves using leak detection spray. A continuously leaking exhaust port or pressure migration between isolated circuits does indicate internal valve damage.
Replace a defective four-circuit protection valve as a complete unit; overhauling internal spring and seal kits does not provide sufficient reliability for safety-critical compressed air circuits. Before removal, fully depressurise all air tanks, label the lines by circuit and prevent dirt from entering open connections. Use only lines and fittings with the correct fit and sealing method; PTFE tape entering the valve passage can block control valves. After installation, check pressure build-up, leak tightness and the separate operation of all circuits again.
At the same time, replace or service a saturated air dryer cartridge and drain condensate from the air tanks. This helps limit corrosion and seal deterioration in the new valve.
