Air dryer

An air dryer removes water vapour, oil aerosols and contaminants from the compressed air before it reaches the air tanks, brake valves and pneumatic consumers. This component is crucial for the service brake, parking brake, EBS (Electronic Braking System), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), air suspension and any trailer brake circuits. In MAN trucks such as the TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3, Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros and Arocs, as well as buses such as the Citaro, Lion’s City, Tourismo and Neoplan coaches, a properly functioning compressed air dryer prevents corrosion, freezing and internal damage to control valves. Pneumatically equipped Mercedes Sprinters, Varios and MAN TGE vans may also depend on a specific dryer unit or air dryer cartridge.

Air dryers are available as complete dryer units, replaceable dryer cartridges and systems with an integrated pressure regulator, safety valve, regeneration valve or multi-circuit protection valve. Air dryer cartridges remove both moisture and oil from the air brake circuit. The cartridge generally contains a hygroscopic desiccant, usually silica gel or a molecular sieve, which absorbs condensate from the compressed air. During regeneration, a limited amount of dry air is routed back through the desiccant via the exhaust outlet; moisture and oil-containing condensate residues are then discharged.

The correct version depends on factors including system pressure, connection diameters, line configuration, electric heating, operating temperature and the presence of an integrated ECU (Electronic Control Unit)-controlled drying function. In heavy-duty applications with MAN D20, D26 or D38 engines and Mercedes OM 471 or OM 473 engines, the drying capacity must match the air compressor output, air demand and number of pneumatic circuits. A cartridge with an incorrect thread, sealing diameter or pressure rating can cause leaks, insufficient regeneration or faults in brake pressure build-up. Therefore, always identify air dryers and dryer cartridges using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

A saturated dryer cartridge allows moisture to pass through to the air tanks. Typical consequences include rust-coloured condensate when draining the tanks, sticking valves, slow-reacting brake circuits, pressure loss and EBS or ABS fault messages. In freezing conditions, frozen exhaust outlets, control valves and couplings can cause temporary or complete failure. Oil in the tanks does not necessarily indicate a defective air dryer: also check the air compressor for excessive oil carry-over, worn piston rings or a damaged compressor seal.

Start the diagnosis by fully draining all air tanks. Assess the amount of water, oil traces and solid contamination. Then build up pressure and check the filling time, the pressure regulator cut-out pressure and the audible regeneration blow-off when system pressure is reached. Measure with a calibrated pressure gauge before and after the dryer unit; an abnormal pressure drop indicates a restriction, leaking seal or defective control section. Also check the supply voltage and resistance of the heating elements on frost-protected versions. Read out any fault codes using diagnostic equipment, especially on vehicles with electronically controlled air treatment.

Replace the dryer cartridge according to the specified maintenance interval, but do so sooner in intensive urban traffic, with high air demand, frequent idling or demonstrable moisture exposure. Before installation, clean the connection surfaces and check the O-rings for compression set, hardening and cracks. Lubricate seals only with a suitable, material-compatible product; contamination with mineral oil or assembly paste can damage the desiccant and valves. Tighten cartridges to the specified torque to prevent leaks or damage to the housing.

If water continues to appear in the air tanks after replacement, inspect the regeneration line, blow-off valve, pressure regulator and air compressor as a complete system.
