Spring brake cylinder

A spring brake chamber is a safety-critical pneumatic brake component consisting of a diaphragm section for the normal service brake, actuated via the foot brake, and a spring brake section for the parking brake and emergency brake. The chamber typically combines a diaphragm brake chamber for the service brake with a spring brake chamber in which a powerful preloaded compression spring mechanically applies the parking brake in the event of pressure loss. This fail-safe principle prevents a truck, bus or towed vehicle from rolling away when the compressed air supply fails. Spring brake chambers are mainly found on driven axles of MAN TGL, TGM, TGA, TGS, TGX and TG3, Mercedes Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Econic, and on MAN and Mercedes buses such as Lion’s City, Lion’s Coach, Citaro, Intouro and Tourismo.

A combined spring brake chamber consists of a service brake section and a parking brake section. The service brake chamber receives compressed air via the foot brake valve or EBS (Electronic Braking System) and moves the push rod towards the slack adjuster and S-camshaft on drum brakes. On certain disc brake systems, the actuator operates directly on the mechanical actuation of the brake caliper. The spring brake chamber is filled with compressed air while driving to keep the powerful compression spring contained; when the handbrake valve is operated or pressure is lost, this spring releases and applies the parking brake.

Important classifications include diaphragm brake chambers, combined diaphragm/spring brake chambers, and versions with a clamp ring design or a sealed, non-serviceable spring brake chamber. Selection is based on factors including chamber size, effective diaphragm area, push rod stroke, thread size or clevis connection, mounting dimensions, port position and nominal operating pressure. A different stroke length or incorrect push rod geometry may cause an incorrect slack adjuster lever angle, insufficient braking force or dragging brakes. Always identify spring brake chambers using the vehicle chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient, even when the mounting flange or air ports appear identical.

Air loss through the vent hole, a parking brake that releases slowly, a vehicle pulling to one side during braking, or a wheel overheating after release are common fault symptoms. A ruptured diaphragm in the service brake chamber causes internal or external compressed air leakage and reduced actuation force. Corrosion on the push rod, a seized clevis, damaged seals or moisture contamination caused by insufficiently drained air reservoirs can block linear movement. During intensive winter operation, water and road salt regularly cause corrosion on clamp rings, housings and mounting bolts.

Secure the vehicle, first build up sufficient system pressure and check the pressure readings on the instrument panel. Then apply the parking brake and listen for leaks around the air ports, diaphragm chamber and vent. Use leak detection spray on fittings and pipes; bubbles indicate an external leak. Next, measure the free and applied push rod stroke with the parking brake released and applied. Compare the measured stroke with the vehicle-specific manufacturer tolerance. Excessive stroke may indicate not only a defective actuator, but also incorrectly adjusted slack adjusters, worn brake linings, S-camshaft wear or a seized brake caliper.

Also check whether the parking brake actually applies mechanically in the event of pressure loss. Never open a spring brake chamber or remove the clamp ring: the contained spring exerts extremely high force, making disassembly without a specialised safety procedure life-threatening. Use only the designated mechanical release bolt or caging bolt in accordance with the installation instructions.

Replace a spring brake chamber in the event of diaphragm leakage, a corroded-through housing, damaged push rod, insufficient return movement or a defective spring mechanism. Also replace affected air lines, sealing rings and fittings where leakage or corrosion is present. After installation, check port sealing, push rod alignment, slack adjuster setting and the operation of both the service brake and parking brake. A functioning air dryer and periodic draining of condensate from the air reservoirs significantly reduce internal corrosion. Correct part identification and rapid availability of suitable brake components help minimise downtime and safety risks in the workshop.
