Valve plate for MAN and Mercedes trucks and buses

The valve plate forms the central gas exchange component of the air compressor in pneumatic braking systems. This plate carries the inlet and delivery valves, separates the cylinder chamber from the compressor cylinder head and, together with seals, valve springs and valve covers, determines the effective compression efficiency. On MAN trucks such as TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX with D08, D20, D26 or D38 engines, among others, and Mercedes vehicles such as Atego, Axor, Actros, Arocs and Citaro with, for example, OM 904, OM 906, OM 457, OM 470 or OM 471 engines, the design varies according to the compressor version. Always identify a valve plate using the chassis number and the compressor identification present. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient.

Function, versions and compatibility of compressor valve plates

A valve plate generally contains plate valves or spring steel valves for the intake and delivery sides. During the downward piston stroke, the inlet valve opens due to vacuum; during the upward stroke, it closes and the delivery valve opens as soon as the cylinder pressure exceeds the pressure in the delivery line. The valve plate must withstand high cyclic loads, temperature fluctuations and air system pressures. The geometry of the ports, valve lift, spring force and sealing surface directly determines the filling rate and air pressure build-up speed.

There are single-stage and multi-stage compressors, air-cooled versions and versions cooled by engine coolant, with different bore diameters, channel patterns and mounting distances. The thickness of the valve plate, the number of delivery channels and the position of oil and coolant passages also vary. An apparently identical plate with a different port diameter or gasket pattern can cause insufficient air delivery, leakage between the cylinder and cooling circuit, or premature breakage of valve reeds.

Wear patterns and diagnosis of insufficient air output

Typical faults include cracked valve reeds, fatigued valve springs, indented sealing surfaces, warped plates and carbon deposits around the delivery ports. Compressor oil consumption, overheating or moisture contamination in the compressed air accelerate this damage. In practice, this is evident from slow pressure build-up, frequent activation of the compressor control system, insufficient system pressure, oil in the air dryer or blowback through the intake. These symptoms are often noticed sooner on buses with frequent stop-start operation and trucks with intensive pneumatic consumers.

Targeted inspection before dismantling

First check the pressure build-up time according to the vehicle specification and read out fault codes from the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and EBS (Electronic Braking System). Then measure the pressure before and after the air dryer using a calibrated pressure gauge. A major pressure loss may also be caused by leaking lines, a faulty pressure regulator or a leaking four-circuit protection valve. Rule out these external causes before opening the compressor. If internal leakage is suspected, check the delivery line for excessive oil mist and inspect the coolant for oil contamination.

Replacement advice and prevention of consequential damage

Dismantle the compressor on a clean workbench and inspect the cylinder head, piston, cylinder wall, plain bearings and delivery line at the same time. Measure the flatness of the valve plate and cylinder head using a straightedge and feeler gauge; replace components in case of visible warping, corrosion pitting or damaged sealing surfaces. Do not reuse compressed metal seals, and fit new gaskets according to the specified tightening torque and correct bolt sequence. Excessive bolt tension distorts the plate; insufficient preload causes pressure or coolant leakage.

After installation, the compressor must build up pressure quickly and steadily, without an abnormal temperature rise at the delivery connection. In the event of oil contamination, also replace the air dryer cartridge and clean the affected delivery lines. Thanks to technical support and extensive stock, Braem can help determine the correct valve plate for the specific compressor configuration and minimise downtime.
