Fifth-wheel base

mounting plates are fitted to the chassis of a tractor unit and form the base on which the fifth wheel coupling is mounted. Depending on the design, they distribute pressure, provide support or maintain a specified distance between mounting components. They help prevent localised indentation and loss of bolt preload. Incorrect plate thickness or insufficient flatness at the mating surfaces can cause movement in the mounting joint. Therefore, assess not only the mounting plate but also the adjoining chassis, mounting bracket and fasteners.

Distinguish between the mounting plate on which the fifth wheel coupling is mounted, reinforcement plates and dimension-specific spacer plates. These functions are not interchangeable. The part number, mounting position and function within the approved assembly are decisive.

On MAN TGS and TGX or Mercedes Actros and Arocs, the design may vary depending on the coupling type, chassis configuration and mounting height. For tractor units with a fifth wheel coupling, the specific mounting arrangement determines which mounting plate is required.

Always identify parts using the vehicle's chassis number, supplemented by the coupling type, serial number and any conversion documentation. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Check plate thickness, hole diameters, centre distances, edge distances, profile and required flatness. The specified steel grade, yield strength, any heat treatment and corrosion protection must also match. A plate with the same hole pattern does not necessarily have the same load-bearing capacity.

Clunking during load changes, shifted alignment marks and repeatedly loosening fasteners may indicate movement between the contact surfaces. Reddish-brown wear debris around bolt holes is consistent with fretting corrosion caused by small relative movements under load. Other signs of damage include indentation at bolt bearing surfaces, oval holes, pitting corrosion and cracks extending from hole edges. A warped mounting plate can also conceal damage to the underlying structure.

1. Secure the vehicle against rolling, uncouple the semi-trailer and support the fifth wheel coupling in accordance with the workshop procedure. Only loosen load-bearing fasteners once the load has been safely removed from the structure.
2. Record the assembly sequence and plate position. Clean the contact surfaces and inspect both sides of the plate, the bolt holes and adjoining structural components for corrosion, indentation and cracks.
3. Measure the thickness at several points with an outside micrometer. Check flatness with a suitable straightedge and feeler gauge; measure hole diameters in two directions using internal measuring tools to determine ovality.
4. Compare the results with the drawing or repair specification for the exact variant. If necessary, have suspected cracks examined using magnetic particle testing on ferromagnetic steel or another suitable crack detection method.

There is no universal permissible reduction in thickness or deviation from flatness. Simply retightening fasteners does not resolve material loss, damaged holes or insufficient contact area.

Replace mounting plates that are cracked, permanently deformed or worn beyond tolerance. Do not weld, straighten, drill or grind these safety-critical components without an explicitly approved procedure. Do not stack loose plates or washers to correct an incorrect mounting height; this changes the support and grip length of the bolted joint.

First rectify the cause, such as a deformed mounting bracket or corrosion between the mating surfaces. Apply only the specified protective coating; thick paint layers can settle and reduce bolt preload. Check bolt length, property class, thread engagement and locking method. Use a calibrated torque wrench and follow the specified tightening sequence, lubrication condition and any required angle tightening. After installation, check the fit, freedom of movement and fastening in accordance with the coupling manufacturer's maintenance instructions.
